I had the exact same issue on the possibly identical player to yours! nano copy 8gb . And followed your instruction and YES, you are spot on it is actually a 2 gb player and it did recover from disk errors and the useable space is 1.93 gb and works just fine.
All I ask why why why! These idiots could sell it legitimately and and believe me I would have still purchased it even if I knew it is 2GB player as it works, plays and fuctions perfect. Hey hoo. Reported to ebay and paypal etc ect. It is now time to resize and fix my wifes LOL
