My player looks just like yours, also was supposed to be 16GB, but, as a lot of these players are hacked memory, it is only 1.65 GB free memory. I believe image files are limited to 5MB size. If you write to much to the memory (over 2GB) it corrupts the files and sometimes the file names.
You should copy the directory files and directories to your computer before you format and then copy them back later.
You might be able to see the memory with 'Active Partition Manager' free. It did work on 3 of my players.
