So when it plugs into the computer, you can turn it on and use it as per normal?

It sounds to be a HARDWARE problem than anything else.

I think the battery isn't connected properly, or has disconnected from the board, so when you're charging the player, the charge doesn't actually go to the battery so the battery isn't charging at all. Your USB cable and connection on the player is working fine because you can turn on your player when plugged into your computer and your computer picks it up fine so it tells me all the connections on your player's USB port is working fine. I'm thinking the solder or the connection has either broken off or isn't connected properly. Can you open up your player and take a look?
