Default I seem to have a refund

I won a "4GB" mp4 player just before Christmas (see link below). It turned out to be a 1GB player. I complained to the seller and got back a couple of bs responses. Then I took it up with Paypal. Paypal wrote to me asking to get an independent techie to evaluate the player and fax them the details. I thought this was unecessary and didn't bother. Then a couple of days ago on My Ebay I saw that the listing for the sale had changed and now read that I still needed to pay for the player. I thought this was odd and clicked the link to go to Paypal to see if the transaction was still recorded there. And there I found that the full payment has been re-credited to my account. There has been no explanation given either from the seller or Paypal and no request for the player to be sent back. There is a note from Paypal that there $25 fee will be taken from the refund but nothing else.

If I now get a message to return the player I would be at least $25 out of pocket so I will not do that but I am surprised with this result so far.

Good on you!

At least some are getting some justice here.

I bought the exact same unit as you from "buy_lowest". It seems that he has a new alias on ebay as of recent - "come_bid"

I followed through with the request from Paypal to obtain the independent evaluation. Spent $20. Paypal found in my favor but, no refund until I pay for return shipping. I wonder if they would hit me for the $25 fee as well.

If they were to hit me with the $25 fee, it makes the "buyer protection" that they offer a complete joke in my case.

I paid $41.27 for the player.
I paid $20 to have it inspected by computer store.
Paypal wants me to ship back via any "tracking" type method. I estimate that at $8.

I would be into this for $69.27.
If Paypal refund is less the $25 - my refund would be $16.27 thus leaving me a net loss of $53 with absolutely no goods in hand.

Now I know why I am done with Ebay and Paypal. I have one more transaction made via the two that is pending. I had to return a defective item bought on 12-21. Still waiting for the replacement.
Once this is done - I am canceling my Paypal account.

Yes, you will be hit by the $25, it is a deductible that Paypal steals to justify processing your claim. Which it should do with the funds it steals from sellers to justify putting the money in your account in the first place. But Paypal is so cheap and greedy, they dont even provide an 800 number to contact them. Even my grandmother has an 800 number....

Besides the $25 deductible, they expect you to pay for an expert to prove your player is bogus, then pay for the return shipping to HK. By the time that's all added up, well if you thought you got a good deal on the MP4, you might end up paying more to get your money back than the amount you get back. Anyway, that's what I wanted to put in my guide...
