wish id seen this i bought 4 of this fella and just done total scan and found it my 3rd generation 4gb to be 1gb grrr so i guessing my wife and kids are too

-There's so much wrong with that statement. In any event, yes, he's a crook, but for a '1GB' memory chip to show up as 962 MB when formatted is perfectly normal, just like with hard drives...

Amigajoe is correct. 1GB wnn't give you full 1024MB of disk space after formatting your player as there needs to be room for master boot records and firmware as well.
