NEW 4GB MP4 Player Hacked and free virus-hsingfashion
 

I picked up 1 of the 4 GB 3rd Gen Mp4 players hsingfashion had listed on eBay, it was for a young cousin you tends to loose things. Price was around 17, with 18 s/h (I figured hes padding the shipping cost to cheat seller fees) Feedbacks 99.2% nothing bad about these players.

The player comes in a simple non-padded (not bubble wrap) mylar bag, shipped standard post (Shipping costs about 3 bucks.) The players packed in a retail type box with a layer of shrink wrap over it. I opened it, tested the player, as soon as I plugged it into a usb port it attempted to run an autoloader that in turn was going to load the worm ravmon.exe on my system (Nothing like a virus to give you that value added feeling.)

Having removed that I had a look at the drive, the size struck me as odd, it was reporting it was a 4.25 GB drive. More value added fun I expected. So I formated the drive (never hurts to be safe) and couldn't help but notice the drive size had dropped to 955 MB (1 GB drive formated.)

I wrote the seller who did not seem amazed, and told me to format the drive. (Always nice to know that detailed report you sent was read.) So I wrote back using small words and asked for a full refund including shipping. Got the please return the player note as expected, and was told to have tracking on the package as its my RMA number, and assured me they would check with the supplier on this. I do not know who hacked it, it could be that he got them this way.

So the player has been returned and I wait on the next step. Thought I should post a warning about it, see if anyone else has this happen.

Seller Name: yrnehenry, His listing was a 4gb mp4 player for 38, I got it 3 weeks later and it even said 4gb on the back of it. I checked the computer and it said 4gb so I gave him postive feedback.

Couple of hours later I loaded over 2gb of music on it. Format errors occurred. I formatted the player as I was told to now its 961mb which is around 1gb.

The seller wanted me to send it back and he wanted to give me 4 dollars USD as a refund but I would still have to pay to send it back. I said NO, I am not wasting any money on this hacked mp4 player I want my money back.

He kept giving me the run around how they only offer the lowest prices. So I said to heck with it and filed a claim with paypal demanding I at least get 28 dollars back instead of 38.

Just an update:

Sent player back as requested. Offered an replacement or exchange (Now isn't that the same thing?) and states shipping can't be refunded.
11 days have gone past I have to see the replacement, odd as he could walked it here in 4.

Meanwhile his feedbacks starting to show hacked units, 8 GB turns out to be 2 GB, 4 GB are 1 GB. Not so oddly hes responded to a couple of them stating they are the correct size.

Well the sellers done a runner, seems hes no longer on Ebay. No replacement was ever sent, so this should be interesting.

If you paid through Paypal, open a dispute.

What good would that do? If hes got a brain he transfered the funds out of his Paypal account when he dropped off Ebay if not before.

You might be right, but lots of scammers change their eBay IDs and leave Paypal the same. I've had one that filing a dispute didn't work with and one it did. It's worth a try and you've got nothing to lose.

I went ahead and started a claim with Pay Pal last night, they escalated it right away. I don't really expect to see a thing from it, maybe a Police report might get some action.

I was wondering if its worth looking to see if hes changed eBay accounts, and if that would do any good.

Well Pay Pal closed the case in 24 hours, in my favor. It seems I should be getting a full refund. All they asked for was proof I had returned the unit, that was it. I really was expecting more demands from them.
