Hacked player said 16, really 2.

Bought a player advertised as "NEW 3.0" 16GB MP3 MP4 Touch Screen OGG RMVB Player N" by Nan_Store on ebay 11th Dec. Arrived 4th Jan and at first I thought it was all working fine, left good feedback. Turns out it's a hacked memory (of which I was ignorant of beforehand). It's a 16gigaBIT, so really 2gigabye. It has been hacked to say 16gigabyte in the computer, and I so far have been unable to change this.

To date, I've contacted ebay's Trust and Security, and the seller. I will wait 24hrs for the seller to respond (I want a full refund), otherwise I will file a complaint with Paypal.

The player looks like this (not mine, but looks identical).

PS:
I've read many guides and tried quite a number of "hack fixes", but so far none have worked. If anyone's had some luck with a player like this I would love to know how.

MP3 Disk Utils didn't detect the drive
Check Flash only 'found' it in logical, when I click physical it disappears.
H2TestW did work, and it said it's 1.8gb.
I managed to find the memory chip branding, a Hynix, and it's advertised as 16gb, but it's gigaBIT not gigaBYTE.

Update:
Well Paypal will arrange a full money return.... When I send it back to them registered post at my expense. Also they seller has to say it arrived in the same condition.

So, I'm getting the feeling that I'm fucked either way. I either keep it and have a dodgy player, or I send it back, be out of pocket about $18, and risk them saying "no it's different" and be out of pocket the full thing.

Last time I ever buy electronics on eBay. I just wish there was a warning sign up somewhere.

dont send it back, tell paypal to sod off and point them to this site and to the fact the ebay is a fraud site who have been informed of hacked player many many times but done nothing - send it back and you will see no money, hassle paypal again, dont email, phone them

like i said, ebay is also at massive fault here by bot listening to anyone about these problems, see also this site for a full site on the fraud that goes on on ebay with regards to flash memory based devices

I got burned by the same guy nan_store. The unit is the exact same as yours but sold as a 8GB and its a 2GB after checking with H2testw. I contacted him via email and have given him 24hrs to refund 50% on the 2 units or will go to paypal and fight for at least a partial refund as I am sure not going to send it back.

Just go my 50% refund for both units from the seller. Sent him the report from h2testw and pointed him to this forum and he coughed it up without trouble. Told him he had 24hrs to get back to me or I would be starting a paypal dispute for a total refund and with the info on this site I would win. So now I have 2 units that cost me $15 each(which is more than fair to both the buyer and seller) and money in the bank for buying some microsd cards to ram them up.

Thank you to this site for educating me in whats going on not only with these MP3 players but flash memory as a whole!
