tadad1 6th Jul 2006 2:27 am

sachitmaskey,
You just need to find the right firmware to restore your player.
What was your original firmware version?
What did the menus look like?

wolfport2001 6th Jul 2006 9:00 pm

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

sachitmaskey, it took my player a good minute to settle in the firmware and have the screen show the menus and screen selection and all that. So, just keep it open and everything will appear. At least thats what I did.

That should work out for you.

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

You need to use one of the full firmwares we have in out Download section. And, short the pins only once when the device is detected by windows and after than, open the update program and use one of the full firmwares to bring it back to life.

tadad1 10th Jul 2006 5:07 am

wexku, You may have to repeat the process more than once. You may also need to try one of the other full version firmware and format your player.

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

Hi all!! I have an IPod nano clone 2Gb 1.5". My old firmware SC85051B ACT_V3.5.35 2006/03/17. I Update with a wrong firmware and now my player dead. I use this guide and arrive to "Now is recover state, and select the firmware file for recovering please!". When i try to put a new firmware with the "MP3 Player Upgrade tool" and push "Recover Firmware"
appear the error: " Unknown flash type!" and the display turn on blue screan! If i turn off the player and i turn on the display is black.
I try with all fimware that there are in this forum.

Please help! :(
Sorry for my english

tadad1 10th Jul 2006 5:31 am

bianchidavide, You must use one of the firmware from the full firmware download section first. Then you can try the dump files from the Medium Color Screen section. If that fails you may need to format your player between upgrades.

I "almost" owe you a beer:

This is my 1,8" 1GB MP3
http://hkdream-tech.com/products/Mp3Mp4/DT220.jpg

Within 3 hours I owned it I was able to kill it (I was following the manual step by step to learn, antil the part: "Now it´s time to upgrade your player")

->F*** chineses, they have to tell in the manual that :"This proccess is absolutelly unecessary and will ruin your player"
------------------------------------------------

Anyway, after 15 hours, I managed to make it work again, perfectlly, BUT:
-> I damaged it during the "operation": This model has the battery attached to the "back" part and four wires between the board and the back. Of course, one of them is now "loose", and I don´t really now where it fits. :(

Does anyone have a clue? Or maybe a link to a mp4-hardware site?

Thank you veeeeery much, If I may say so, you should add that we´ll usually need 2 files (one .fw and one .bin) to recover, both need to be from the same "number"model and are different for each player.

tadad1 14th Jul 2006 2:07 am

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

Victor1980 ,
3 Hours to kill, not bad :)
Re Lose wire hope this helps

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/6144/wiring0ut.jpg

Re need 2 Firmware 1 .fw, 1 .bin. Not all full firmware are .fw some can be .bin. they also do not have to be the same number I have used a full 3.5.37 and a 3.5.35 dump together to recover a player.

Re Beer What is with ALMOST? :)

Glad you got your player up and running again.

Victor1980 15th Jul 2006 3:11 am

DUDE, You are the BEST!

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/2200/dn80691350ri6.jpg

Although you answered and found as impossible image of what I needed in 40 minutes, I ended up taking it to a technician. Since I don´t have the tools nor the skill to fix my "baby", guess this was the best choice.

Anyway, I upped the image on my other player, and demmanded him to see it! (he claimed he already knew how to fix it, but I trust no one anymore :p)

Thanks A LOT!

tadad1 15th Jul 2006 3:40 am

Victor1980, DUDE that is an awesome BEER

CHEERS

Please help!
As many before me, I tried to upgrade and now get the flashing blue screen. Windows XP will not recognize the player, but there are no screws on this thing to open it up? Anyone with this type of player with no screws? MIne is a IPOD knock-off with apple logo on back 2GB

Any help would be apprecieted.
Thanks

tadad1 17th Jul 2006 9:07 pm

ddish, Unless you can open it there is not much you can do. Try to gently wedge the player open it may just have snap locks.

Victor1980 17th Jul 2006 10:20 pm

AND, if you are willing to spend a few bucks, look for those tech assistance stores that fix from cell phones to DVD. I found one that also sells MP4, and they know how to fix firmware problems... though tadad1 helped me out with that :D

That is exactly whats going on here, thanks ddish, i was about to give up due to my own stupidity, but now that i know that someone else is in the same boat as me i feel a bit better about fixing my MP4
Details:
its a 1.5" screen nano clone (even has a bootleg "apple" symbol on it)
uses(or used rather) the ACT 3.5.35 firmware as its default (from dealer)
So every time i short the chip it resets and installs the usb mass storage drivers and then opens the drive location showing it as completely blank...
i managed to get it to the recovery stage onceeee... but alas i somehow screwed it over again while tryin to reinstall the firmware... i made sure to use a full version of 3.5.35, and it still doesnt work...any insights? please and thank youuuuuu

tadad1 19th Jul 2006 7:47 pm

DanDan & ddish,
There are a couple of things you can try if you are not able to load AdfuUpdate.ini.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties, then the Hardware tab, then device manager and find the entry for the USB Device, right click on it and uninstall it.
Unplug your player.
Make sure you are logged into windows with Administrator rights.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties, then the Hardware tab, then Driver Signing and select Ignore and set as default.
Right click on the AdfuUpdate.ini and select install.
Connect your player to a different USB port preferably one you have not used before and short the chip again then try to install the ADFU driver.

Guys,
First of all I want to say a big thanks for all the help here. Its great!
Second, I finally got it running again. I set it up on another computer that did not have a previous instal. Shorted it and it worked...did the rest as in the guide and now back to normal.
Thanks again

ddish, Man that is great news, I love it when a plan comes together. :)

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

heh...heh...heh....
thanks for your help tadad1
It worked pretty much...
...to an extent...
When i tried to reinstall the firmware (3.5.35 that i got from the link on your dead player recovery guide) the mp3 upgrade tool read "Complete" but the player did not show any signs of life except for a glowing black screen, i tried to proceed with the guide...but the mp4 player seems to have not accepted the firmware... Please help again...i used the mp3 utitlities 3.68 program...is there somthing wrong with that version?...well i shouldnt guess...ill leave it in your hands...they are very capable ones after all.
thank you in advance..
DanDan

Oh i forgot to mention that i also tried the other firmware versions on your guide.

tadad1 20th Jul 2006 6:14 pm

DanDan,
In most cases to fully recover your player you need to flash it twice, once with a full version firmware and then with a firmware dump.
When your player is in recovery mode it will only accept a full version firmware but once that is installed you should then be able to load dump files.
In some cases you may need to format the player before uploading the dump files.
The trick is finding the dump.bin that is compatible your player. The links I provided are just the ones that worked with my player.
There are a lot more in the Download>Firmware section. If you know what version your player had stick with that version. If your player becomes unresponsive while trying different ones you need to start again by shorting the chip.
Unfortunatly without a backup of your original firmware it is just a matter of trial and error until you hit the right combination of full and dump version firmware which can be frustrating and time consuming.

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

Thanks for your guide it was very helpfull to bring my player a life. I was messing around with firmware. But with the full version of 3.5.35 it's back.

I bought my players last week in Beijing, very cheap for a 4gb version

CPU: ATJ2085W, Memory VDATA VD101KC13-L1
SC85051C, date 2006/06/29
ACT_V3.5.35

 Now i know why they so cheap, it isnt 4gb but 128 mb

hi there

i've followed your tutorial but it seems that i don't have the adfuupdate.inf file on my pc :( ! so can you pls upload the file somewhere that i can get it?

tia
Observer

:edit: after shorting around the chip my player now can be recognised from my pc but it cannot start from its own i tried putting several firmwares but nothing happened

tadad1 21st Jul 2006 6:55 pm

Obs, If you have MP3 Player Utilities installed there is a copy of the driver in the folder MP3 Player Utilities 3.68\RDiskUpdate\driver.
The hardest part of recovering the player is finding the right firmware for your player. You need to install a Full Version firmware first and then you can try different dump files till you find the right one. If your player stops responding you need to go back to square 1 and short the chip again to set the player into Recovery Mode then upload another Full Version firmware and keep trying dump files.
Sorry there is no quick fix for the problem if can be fixed on the first try or it could take you 100 attempts.

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

ok i think i found a compatible firmware but after doing the upadte with the fwupdate utility my player just hangs there with a blue screen what do i need now to continue any tips ?

:edit: unfortuantely my disk is MP3set3_66 version and there is no rdisk folder and no driver inside

tadad1 22nd Jul 2006 5:09 am

Obs, that tells me it is not a compatible firmware. You need to try some others. Other versions of the MP3 Tools are available in the Download>Tools section.

Help me pls!!!

I have problem my iPod is dead after upgrade firmware and i try to do follow Dead recovery guide but i have problem my screen can't open and pc can detect ADFU device and me try to recover it's show " Read or write device information failed! Please exit the program and check if device is connecting!"

Pls help me!!!

tadad1 24th Jul 2006 12:28 am

golfzila, What happens when you short the chip?
Try using a different USB port if you can one you have not used the player on before and then short the chip again. The player will not accept any firmware until it is in recovery mode and then you will need to use a Full Version Firmware not a dump.bin.

DanDan 24th Jul 2006 4:45 pm

Re: DEAD PLAYER RECOVERY GUIDE

Okay sorry for being such a pain, but what should the pc pick the player up as after i install the firmware and flash it for the second time?

Just as a note after i recover the firmware the device becomes automatically disconnected...is that supposed to happen?

Sorry again,
DanDan

PS i think i might have posted this in some other random place...sorry about that too.

tadad1 24th Jul 2006 5:09 pm

DanDan, After you install the Full Version firmware the player should be recognised as it usually is in explorer (a removable device). You may have to format the player before it will accept the next dump file. Also if the dump file is giving you an error you may have to place it in the s1fwx folder and run the repair.bat then try to load it. Some of the files uploaded have not been repaired and will return an error message when trying to use them.
