jon, 7z files are like zip files but with greater compression, you need to install 7zip ir Winrar to extract them. you can download the latest freeware version of 7zip here: http://www.7-zip.org/

lefrosth,
You only need to short the chip if your player is not detected by Windows or the Update Tool. If your player is detected then you can just use RDiskUpdate as you have discribed in steps 2,3&4.

If your player is not detected then you use Step 1 until your player is recognised by Windows as an ADFU Device then you can use steps 2,3&4 but you must install a full version firmware if your player is in ADFU Mode. If you can not get it detected as an ADFU device then it will not work. If you are having problems try connecting to a different USB port and short the chip in different places, I found I had the most success shorting the pins from side to side accross the chip.

Once you load the full version firmware then you can try some dump files.

lefrosth, How long ago did you buy your player, because The 3.2.16 firmware you are using is dated 19-06-2005 and I doubt it will even load onto a new player.
What version was your original firmware?
You should not put them in the recover folder either. This folder is created by the RDiskUpdate.exe when the firmware is loaded and it will rename the firmware $actsdk$.fw and place it in the recover folder. I would even advise that you delete the recover folder after trying a firmware as the update utility can sometimes get hung and keep trying the same firmware over and over.
I suggest you find a full version firmware that matches your players original firmware version.
