Blue Screen Of Life - HELP PLEASE !!!
 

I bought a new iPod Nano clone from Cybermart India. (http://www.cybermart.in)

"iPod Style MP3 Player V. Recorder (512 MB)"

When I switched it on, it showed only a blue screen.....or a bluish-black screen more likely.

However when I pressed the PLAY button, the music did start playing.

Windows XP even recognises the player as a USB mass storage device.

The first day it showed a capacity of 494 MB (i think).

Then I formatted it with the MP3 Player Disk Tool.

(I use MP3 Player Utilities 3.68 )

The next day it showed a capacity of 233 MB.

I looked up this forum and found many others with the blue screen problem.

This is what I did the first day I bought the player:

---I used s1fwx v3 to extract the FW.
---I also used it to repair the extracted FW.
---I used Undisker to grab an image of my player which came to 494 MB.
---I also examined the repaired FW in s1res. I think it has an opening image of a lotus.

The next day the player began to show a capacity of 233 MB as I mentioned earlier.

I thought I should try flashing the firmware.

---I did a low-level format first.
---Then used the MP3 Player Upgrade Tool which detected the existing FW as 3.5.35.
---I then used this..."3.5.37v2.1b FM for recovery" to flash the player.
---Next I used "MP693C-SL_Alternative" to flash the player.
---Everything seemed to be successful and everything works just as well as it used to, except for the blue screen.

Could someone please advise me what I can do further to get rid of the blue screen?

This is what I have in hand:

---This brilliant iPod clone showing up a capacity of 233 MB but still functions as a USB disk and can play music when I press the PLAY button....all the other buttons work too! I am still stuck with a blue screen with no menus or text displayed. It feels like a blind man operating an MP3 player.

---I have my original non-repaired FW.

---I have my original repaired FW.

---I have a grabbed image of my player done with Undisker showing 494 MB.

---I believe my player can play MP3, WMA, and AMV files. It seems it has an FM radio too that can record. It has a mic on the right side, 2.5 mm earphone jack at the lower right, tiny USB jack at the bottom, and a switch at the top right.

I think it is a Type C1 player. It has the word "iPod" written at the base of the screen. (Don't know what is written underneath it). Slightly similar to this http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7773/140jk1.jpg

---I opened up the player and found two chips. The one on top has ATJ2085H written on it. The one below has PQI KA04-042C-1D00 written on it. The battery has HQFB 3.7v Li-042040, 260 mAh written on it.

---The other side of the board has the board ID written on it which is "MP-693C-SL MAIN v1.3, 2005/12/14". I didn't note down the number on the side of the display. I also found the screen to be slightly damaged on the lower left.

(Could that be the cause of a blue screen ?)

---I must say the earphones are crap even though they look beautiful.

---Is the PQI memory chip really a 512 MB one?

---I also have the HP USB Boot Utility, but haven't used it yet.

---I am afraid to experiment with more FW. Could someone give me a detailed sequence of operation ?.....I would like to listen to radio. How many times do I have to press "M" to get to radio and then listen to radio and then get out of it to go to music mode, and then listen to some music, and then get out of it to go to voice recording mode to record my Pastor's sermon, and then get out of it in order to quit the player ? (I know I can't watch a movie with a screen like this).

---Does anyone know where in India I can get this thing repaired ? (Cybermart doesn't seem to respond at all).

macrocom, You do not mentioned if you have tried to reload your repaired backup.

Dear tadad1, i am not sure whether the FW that came along with the player really belongs to it, since the player showed a blue screen right from the beginning.

Could it be possible that i was sold a player that somebody else tried to flash and ended up with the wrong FW ?

The original one was 3.5.35 and when I examined it under s1res, it had a lotus picture in "END.RES".

Should i try flashing some other FW ?

macrocom, Sometimes extracting the firmware and repairing then reloading it back can fix some problems. I would be careful flashing unknown firmware as your player could stop working completely. Try your repaired backup and see what happens.

3.5.35 with lotus flowers is a good stable firmware, I have it on one of my players. I have uploaded my backup to the download section. If your backup does not work try mine.

Hi guys, i have the same problem. My computer can recognize mp4 player as a flash disk but player's screen is always blue. I tried to repair it with lots of firmware but the screen still blue. But one time i got a white screen with black lines moves rapidly on screen but i don't remember which FW is it.

I am using my mp4 player as a flash memory right now. It does not play any song and it does not show any picture on screen. Only blue theme :)

zidged, Was it always blue or did it turn blue after you flashed it?

Sorry tadad1, your dump doesnt work on mine. It says "invalid firmware file".

I have finally reverted back to my own FW.

As usual all the buttons work, and the music plays, and I can use it as a USB disk, but still I have a blue screen.

I have a feeling that my own FW isnt my own FW.

If any one has a similar player (512 MB) bought from Cybermart India, could you please send me your dump ?

Kindly verify the board ID and other details I have given in the my first post.

Please send me your FW only if it is exactly identifcal to the specifications I have mentioned above.

I have tried various FW and still have a blue screen, but all the other functions work (i can listen to music, use it as a USB disk etc.)
