Nano Clone - Won't Turn On
 

I had recently purchased an Ipod Nano clone from the fifthunit.com store located in Hong Kong (could be China though); and it was working okay (firmware is very slow, and FM reception is unuseable, was missing USB cable, and battery is extremely short), but I had run into some trouble yesterday. I had the player charged by connecting it to my PC with the USB cable (I bought a new one), and it was charging fine. I left it there overnight, then, I "Safely Removed" it from my PC -- but, I left everything plugged in. It was disconnected, but still physically connected. I've never updated the firmware and done anything to that, and I usually just add music and videos.

After a few hours, I came back home to unplug my player from the PC; I didn't bother to "Safely Remove" again, because I figured that I did it this morning -- it shouldn't re-detect the player again, but I could have been wrong... So I simply pulled the USB plug, and then turned it off. When I wanted to use the player, I tried to turn it on -- nothing happened. I tried both methods of turning it on; and also tried to plug it into PC with USB; doesn't detect it.

It doesn't turn on anymore. I have no tried AC wall outlet to charge yet... But the player doesn't even turn on; and I have no changed the firmware or anything! It's not stuck loading -- it simply won't turn on.

Can anyone help? Sorry for the lengthy post. Thanks in advance,

Gordon, It sounds to me as if your player may have suffered some damage. I have read posts from people who have had problems using USB cables obtained to replace lost or faulty cables that came with their players.
Some mention overheating while charging and other issues. I suggest contacting your seller for a replacement.

Should I contact fifthunit.com, or the people who made the player? Unfortunately, I only know who sells it, now who produced it... Do you suggest that I try the Dead Player Recovery Guide first before I consider getting a replacement, or try and update the firmware?

I had actually gotten this new USB from Radio Shak a while ago, and it fits perfectly -- it's worked before (charges okay, and files gets transfered fast); I don't see how it should fail now... Unless it was me leaving it plugged in too long? I may also try contacting Radio Shak or the USB makers, as it may have been their faulty USB that damaged the player. ONe last question; has anyone else run into the problem of their player not working because of firmware? I've read somewhere that the firmware can get screwed up on it's own, so I may consider the Player Recovery Guide. I've heard a lot of people say "Do not flash your player's firmware!" What does this mean?

Gordon, I would contact the seller regarding warrenty replacement. If you have no luck there then by all means try the dead player recovery guide but it does not sound like a firmware problem to me.

Flashing your players firmware means to use the MP3 Upgrade Tool to load a new version of the players firmware. It overwrites the version on your player. Flashing with an incompatible firmware version can leave your player unusable, that is why it is not recommended.

Thanks for the response. I am still awaiting reply from my seller. I guess while I am waiting, I will try plugging my nano to the AC outlet; then, I will try dead recovery guide just in case... I guess I am hoping for money back; that way I can buy another Nano Clone, one that is better than this one. Is there a place where I can look at the different Nano Clones and see which one is my favorite? Thanks,

Gordon, Hope you can get the problem sorted with the seller. Possibly the best place to see a variety of differrent players would be eBay.

Make sure to try plugging it into the AC outlet. Similar thing happened to me, but mine didn't turn on because I dissasembled mine (and i thought i zapped the chip). But once i plugged it into the charger it started right up.
