Screen inactive, but player still works

Hey guys, can you help me out? =(

I consider myself to be pretty proficient with computers, so this is annoying me greatly. I'll summarise

-I installed wrong firmware, after which the player still works but the screen doesn't
- I found the correct one by looking at the serial code on my player
- I installed it, after which the player still works but the screen STILL doesn't work.

Is this normal? Should the screen be fixed after correcting the firmware? Or did I miss something?

Thanks in advance,

-Nii

EDIT: As an aside, I also recall during the time the upgrade messed up, I could see the screen, but very faintly. As if the contrast was too low or something. Where do I set this?

And so you guys know, the player code is MP-693C-SL, the ipod nano 2gb clone.

Hi Nii
You will need to look at the chip in your player not the mem chip but the other smaller one it will be ATJ2085? it may or may not have another letter where the ? is such as H or F this will help you to find the correct firmware for your player.
Cheers

Thanks for your help! I can't find any serial number that looks like that on the RAM module, but it says:

Samsung 619
K9WAG08U1A PCB0

Wait is that the RAM module? =P

Anyway, I found the proper firmware (used wrong one before >.>) but with this one it considers the firmware to be the invalid one! Even if I'm pretty sure it's the right one, since it has the same icons and stuff!

The one I used to have looks just like this one:
http://www.mympxplayer.org/dload.php...le&file_id=280
Except the date on mine is 2005.12.14 rather than the 2005.12.24 hosted there. But it's considered an invalid firmware!!! Woe is me! =(

Oh sorry I just realised you said the smaller chip. From what I can see (blasted sticker in the way, and is too hard to remove) the code is AT12085W.

EDIT: Woops I meant ATJ2085W

EDIT2: Okay I downloaded a billion firmwares for this serial code, and one of them happened to work. The screen is barely visible, but I can see movement. There are thick lines across the screen, each with a different level of brightness, while the whole screen has a very dim look to it. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you fix it?

Also for some strange reason, the menus are in chinese, and look nothing compared to what is shown in the dump file when I explore within it...

Sound like you are having exactly the same problem I did. I found this firmware restored my player which sounds very much like yours. Hope this helps...

Sorry, but this firmware didn't worked. The flash program meant that there's a "flash error". And also your firmware is an older version... I tried now other 5 firmwares but no one of them worked :(
Somebody has any new idea?!!??!? Plz HELP!

sibbl, The problem is you have not found a firmware to suit your player. Because you do not have a backup of your original firmware you will just have to try random firmware until you find a compatible one. This could be 20 - 30 - 50 ......
Do not pay to much attention to the version numbers as they have become a little meaningless, some firmware that shows as 3.2.16 on the player can read as 3.5.37 with s1fwx.
If you have not done so already read the Dead Player Recovery Guide HERE so that you understand what you may have to do to recover your player.

Hi
I have the exact same problem as you guys. When i turn my player on it is a black screen though i can dimly see the screen.
If i connect my player to the computer it still reads it fine(except for a bit of lag) so do i still have to start the recovery process from the start?
Thanks :o

Dulithak, As long as your player is still recognised by the upgrade tool you can just keep trying firmware. A reset is only neccessary if the player stops being recognised.

sibbl, Please explain your problem and what you have done to date a little more , if you have a backup of your original firmware on your player it should be ok.

Re: Screen inactive, but player still works

I hope you'll understand my bad English

A week ago I copied new MP3s to my nano clone. Then my computer had a crash - it rebooted without any comment... Then I took my mp4-player out of the usb-port of my pc and tried to listen to my music. It worked until approx. 5 minutes later the screen got black. but the music played further! Then I tried to format the player and tried again. Again black screen and music played. Now I thoguht it would help if I copy my backup of the original firmware to the player again. It didn't helped also...
I don't know what to do next! I bought the player in Singapore and I won't get there again this year...
I hope I helped you a bit...

sibbl~ yep, i think the screen is supposed to turn black if the mp3/4 is inactive for a certain amount of time. it might be that it is saving power. if the screen goes back to normal when you push a button, then the mp3/4 is working the way it should. i hope this helps you a bit.
