Problem Connecting to Computer
 

Just got a 2gb 1.5 nano clone yesterday however having problems connecting it to the computer. After plugging it in windows comes up saying new hardware found.... and then later says your hardware has been installed successfully but when i go to My Computer to find it, or use the mp3 player disc tool there is no mp3 player or anything connected. If i go into device manager and into the usb thing its plugged into, it says 'unknown device' I think i need a driver or something even though i am using win Xp im really not sure. If anyone could help it would be greatly welcomed.

arrgh yeah and also im not sure if its suppossed to this but is it normal for the mp3 player when connected through usb to come up with the image of the startup screen - blue screen with arrow, then go to a picture with it being attached to a computer then after 20sec flash off for a sec and then repeat over and over again? Seems a bit weird.

jonjon, it seems that your two problems are inter-related. I have a feeling that maybe your cable is faulty, or usb port is faulty, or your player's usb socket is faulty.
Try it on another usb port and on another computer to see if the problem persists.
Generally when you connect your player to the computer, your player should show the screen of the player connected to the computer, and probably after a couple of secs would black out. But if you click any buttons, it would would show the same screen again.

Is the blue screen with the arrow or hourglass?

Couple of things you can try, connect to a different USB port, try another usb cable they are quite often faulty. Check to see if gently moving the connector at the player end makes a connection.If you have acces to another XP PC try connecting to it.
This should help work out if it is the player, the cable or your PC that is giving you grief.

It doesn't work in different USB ports, but will test it on another computer in a few days when i can. But it possibly could be the USB cable i think i might have got the wrong one with my mp3 player.

This kinda shows why i think that... in this picture i highlighted in red two grooves but when you look at my usb cable below it only has one groove it makes it kinda hard to fit in should it be like this? I read about this somewhere 'http://forum.s1mp3.org/viewtopic.php?t=991' which says there is little difference anyway.

Sorry for the pictures phone camera sucks...Oh and where could i find a USB cable for this if i wanted to replace it i live in NZ so DSE or something?

UPDATE: Now know what the problem is, it's in the player. The part where you put the USB in has become loose (so much it could be pulled out) and so that will be why it is not connecting propperly. Does anyone know if this could be repaired? I opend and could see that three of the four sort of prongs in the USB port in the player have been broken (they are still very close and still could be connecting though, hard to tell) however they are really small and look quite difficut to fix, could someone fix this sort of thing?

Jonjon, if you are comfortable with soldering confined spaces, you can try re-soldering the contacts back to the board.
Or else the next better option would be to bring it to someone good in such soldering work, maybe your friends or some handphone repair/electronics repair shops.

Jonjon, You should get on to the seller and get a replacement if the connector is faulty, otherwise it will only give you grief and you may not be able to fix it.

Can the USB cables for these things be picked up on the high street or are they specific to the MP4 player??

GREAT site by the way. You've saved me smashing my new mp4 'player' into a million tiny nanocloned pieces.

Not sure where this cable can be bought. Guess it is some kinda special mini usb plug. But you can try your local electronics shop, bring your original cable along to compare the plug size. Else, try ebay or your seller see if they do sell spare cables.

homegrownpushbikes, I have a Casio digital camera that uses the same cord and works on my players so try a Camera store. Some mobile phones also link wth similar cables.
