Default Problem with disk tools & XP?

I bought 2 MP4 players off ebay for the kids for Xmas. 1 is working fine the other is playing up, won't start easily, shuts down after 1 - 10 minutes. I decided to reinstall the firmware from a "recovery" file supplied on the product CD and if that didn't match the firmware on the player I could always make a firmware backup from the good player and install that.
Sounds simple? This is now 2 days later. The problem I seem to be having is that the disk tools Disk manager/Upgrade tool don't recognise or can't see the player. The computer runs on XP Sp2 and windows itself can see the player, I can see the drive, add and delete files etc.
I downloaded MP3 toolset V4.0 from which at least the Disk manager tool works after a couple of "cant find the player" warning notices.
I also downloaded S1fwx but this cant find the player either. I have a few different Mp3 players lying around and have tried these all with the the same results
Any ideas?
