charging failure
 

well one of the two 1gb 1.5'' units I bought the kids for xmas has now failed, wont charge, works as a usb memory stick fine, but unplug the cable, the screen backlight just dims and fades out.

I cant se it being the battery, so must be the charger circuitry, I may open it later and have a look to see if it can be fixed, or bypassed

the dimming of light might be the backlight off time is turned on...check the function in the system menu..or check the cable...try other cables..make sure it is working..if it is not..then there still a lot of discussion we should go through to fix your problem..

No that would dim the backlight to say 50%, and stay at 50%, this is a 100% sliding down over about 2 seconds to 20% then the machines turns off, this happens as soon as the charging is stopped.

Charging is not taking place, its dead jim.

I will open it up when I have time, and voltage measure around inside and see if I can do anything.

I also got a mp4 player from Ebay with the same problem. It says the battery is charged but it dims out and goes dead after about 1 min of use. can these players really be charged?

Oh yes they do charge, but I'm guessing here the circuitry that switches on the charging current, is not upto the job, and eventually stops switching, so when you plug it in you are powering the unit, and it thinks its charging, when its not.

Not had time to look for a cure yet.

Yeah, With mine it does not even get power from the usb I dont think as the player still shows just a black screen when connected to the pc unless I turn it off for a bit. The battery indicator shows a full battery but its clear to see that it's not. I have bought 2 of these mp4 players and I think the same thing is happening to the 2nd one aswell. Is it the same one you have?

No mine are the ipod nano-like clones, but its pretty in pink..........

you just cant say its dead..its still working..its maybe the battery..or the cable that does not charge the battery..sometimes its a lot simpler than a dead player...you must think shallow first than going to the deeper points..

Its a unit, not a system, if the battery fails, its a dead UNIT, its not designed to be a serviceable part, so it is dead.

It may still have the ability to process and store information when connected to USB, but will it work in my pocket as an mp3 player, no.

It would be wrong to call it dead if the headphones have failed, but the internal battery and/or charging circuitry are not replaceable or external.

Now as to if the battery can be replaced, I guess the battery is a specific size to this player, and all from one factory, so if a few players fail, I think its a fair assumption that the entire production run of batterys is a little suspect.

If its the charging circuitry that failed then its because its being overworked, switching circuitry can only switch so much current, if a few of these players are failing, then its also a safe bet that maybe the design limitations of the charging circuitry have been exceeded.

Its one of two possible scenarios, either the battery's are unreliable cheap and worthless, or the switching transistors are overdriven or are also unreliable cheap and worthless.

Either way, 'chi-pod' and quality can only be used in the same sentence with a negative thrown in.
