mp4 4gb corrupt files and iffy battery???

Hi there
I have an ipod looking mp4 player bought off a person on ebay whose girlfriend bought it for him and he didnt use.
Firstly all fired up ok but the battery would go after a few mins. After constantly charging and discharging the unit it shows now half charge, not sure if it will go any furhter. The basic couple of audio files and pictures, video that came on the unit as standard worked fine. Then i put my own music files on ther and they worked fine, but since the files have duplicated themselves in various files and become unreadable, today it is now saying it has a blank disk drive. When i plug into the main pc and check the mp4 drive the files are there but when you click on them it says they are unreadable, i have tried to delete them but it say cannot delete as corrupt. I cannot format the drive with the software from the disc it says it is not recognised by this software. The firmware is as follows:
lsd_9301_10
2006_12_05
9.0.48
2005_01_09
Some questions? Is this unit recoverable? How do i do it? Is it a virus and is it this problem that is causing the battery to not fully charge? I can source another battery fair enough but is it a software problem or bug that is giving false readings etc? I didnt want to start messing with the firmware and stuff if it is not necessary.
Any suggestions please. Many thanks.
Julie

OK here goes, using the disk tool from the cd that comes with the unit i have formatted the hard drive, it has removed the corrupted files but now only shows as a 2 gb unit instead of the previous 4gb. Having said that it looks as if the software provided only supports up to 2gb! I still have the menu and start screen showing the different options for the radio and stuff can anyone suggest what i should do next to get it back to a 4gb unit please and increase the battery. Many thanks Julie

juliebuffy - you won't be able to get it back to a 4gb unit because there was never 4gb in the first place. It seems you have received a "hacked" mp4 player, where you and your computer are deceived into thinking there is more memory in the player than there really is. Whenever you loaded more files onto the player than there was memory, they corrupted. Formatting using disk utilities removed the hack and showed the real memory, which is where you are now. I would suggest reading here and here for more info about the hack, and contacting your seller demanding a partial refund.
