Hi, thanks for reading this.

Basically, I recently got an 8GB player off of eBay, properly formatted it to 2GB. Yesterday, was skimming through these boards and got the impression that it was wise to take a firmware back up of my player. I was interested in themes, etc, but thought 'what harm can backing up do?'

After using s1fwx, which seemed to run ok, I then clicked on the 'repair.bat'. Firmware dump not recognised. I disconnect my player and lo and behold, Hourglass of Death...

Have tried desperately to get this thing into 'ADFU Recovery mode', trying to short out the 8 pins on the both sides of the memory chip. So far, this has not worked (on this, or my mother's PC, battery in or out). Any tips for this? The chip no. is K9LAG08U0M PCB0. The only response I get when doing this is when I short the voltage pins, in which case the player merely dies and powers up again. Currently is being detected as a 'USB Device'. Please help me with this, I'm severly pissed off that a 'backup' tool has managed to break my player so badly.

nofixio , try uninstalling the USB Device from the Device Manager and re-insert into another USB port.

The S1fwx software does not write any data into the player (except for the latest v3.2). The software can only read data. Repair.bat file is a batch file that merely repairs the extracted firmware file and repairs it. Unless you ran the Upload.bat file that actually writes the incomplete firmware file into the player.

Did you just unplug the player without using the safe removal icon?

Right, well I've checked the version I downloaded and it's 2.6.00

I didn't use the safe removal icon no...

I didn't run upload.bat either. All I did was run extract.bat, then ran repair.bat on the dump and was told that it couldn't identify which firmware it was. I then just closed the program and yanked out the player. Has not safely removing it bricked it for good?

What do you think I should do? Trying another USB port doesn't work, not even one on another computer!.

nofixio , these players are very temperamental when it comes to unplugging them. Unplugging directly without safe removal sometimes corrupts the player.

You'll just need to repeat the dead player recovery guide again until you can get the player recognised by the computer.

Have tried the Dead Recovery guide many times... what exactly happens when you strike one of those 8 pins? Even though I've tried lots of times, using all kinds of methods, the only pins that have given any kind of response are the 'VCC' pins on either side of the chip.

nofixio , the dead player recovery guide is a trial and error method to reboot your player. There is no right and wrong method of doing it, just need some luck.
