Yea updating is usually bad news unless it comes from the company itself. Theming can be fun though, and it's fairly safe. There's a few Rockchip firmware editing programs around (they actually just allow you to edit the pictures found in the firmware, not the OS-level stuff) so you can change the look of the player.
