just an update i can get my pc to see the drive by plugging in the usb and pressing the reset button, but the firmware updater dont see a rock device

Riolist 19th Oct 2007 6:30 pm

What kind of drive does it see? You have to get it to see the upgrade partitiion, not the regular data partition. If you're using Windows, look in Device Manager. What kind of drive is it listed as?

Also, what version of the updater are you running?

Re: big mistake flashing onda 858le any possible help

when its just pluged in to usb its says unkown device but when i reset it it says usb mass storage device and im using the firmware updater that came with it its 2.8.1

Riolist 19th Oct 2007 6:45 pm

The way to get a Rockchip player into upgrade mode without the menu is to turn the switch off and hold a button down while plugging it into the computer. It's usually the play button, but a bad firmware can change that so it could be any button, just continue to hold it while you plug it into the computer, if it's not recognized then try a different button, then when it's recognized you can let go of the button and see if the upgrade software recognizes it. If it doesn't, you may have to load the right drivers for that upgrade software. The right drivers should be in the upgrade programs folder. The way to upgrade the driver is to go into Device Manager and delete the driver that's being used, then windows will detect it and ask to find a driver, point it to the one in the upgrade programs folder and it should then be able to upgrade.

Are you just plugging it in or are you powering it off and holding a button down when you plug it in? You have to do the latter to get into upgrade mode. If it says unknown device, don't reset it! You DON'T want mass storage mode. When it says unknown device, follow the driver loading process, but don't let it pick a driver, lead it to the one in the upgrade program folder. If it doesn't have one download the latest upgrade program from this site, it has it. Once that driver is loaded the upgrade program will recognize it and you'll be able to update it, hopefully with the right software.

No problem. Follow these directions carefully. Don't be in a hurry.
1. The player has to be off
2. you have to hold, and keep holding, one of the buttons
3. While still holding the button, plug it into the computer
4. Wait about ten seconds for it to be detected (while still holding the button).
5 if it's not detected, unplug it and try the same process with a different button.

The latest consumer update software is in the downloads section of this site, under 'tools', it's the fifth one down. put it in a conspicuous folder and unzip it, then you'll have to install it, but before you can install it you'll have to uninstall the old version. Do that through windows control panel.

Does it have an actual on/off switch? If it does, turn it to the off position then hit the reset hole, then it should be off.

Has it been doing this all along? Because you only mentioned it two posts ago. It's important that you provide accurate and complete information, you have to realize that it's difficult to help someone blind like this, and information is the only thing that lets us 'see' what's happening with your player. From now on please try to be as accurate and complete as possible.

With the power off, try plugging it into a usb charger (NOT the computer) then unplugging it.

paul01609 19th Oct 2007 8:04 pm

for the second time, does it have an actual on/off switch, that is, a slide switch that has discrete 'on' and 'off' positions, or is it just a single momentary pushbutton that you press and hold to turn the player on and off?

Also, have you downloaded and installed the new version of the updater? And do you know which folder it installed to? Before you do anything else, please do that, and know which folder it installs to (which may be different from the one you downloaded to, if you don't understand this, ask). Go to that folder and identify the correct driver, it's in a folder that mentions windows XP.

I don't see how it can be since the updater program only works under windows.

That's fine but you can't do anything to restore your player with Unbuntu because the updater program won't run under that os, it only runs under windows. The goal is not to get your dead player recognized, it's to update the firmware to the correct version, and that can only be done under windows.

Ok, i'll try. For the third time, does the player have an actual on/off switch or just a button?

For the second time, have you downloaded the latest updater from this site, installed it, and located the usb driver that is found in the install folder?

Have you located the install folder and identified the correct usb driver? It's in the folder titled 'RockUSB Driver(2k,XP,2003)'?

paul01609 20th Oct 2007 8:25 am

sorry m8 had to go to bed it was 6am and i was satterd,i havent looked in the rockusb driver.i have just got up and the player is now fully off

Ok, you say you have a known good version of the firmware, right? So, start up the NEW updater program (the one you just installed) and load the known good firmware into it, and tell me if it loads without any errors with all four boxes filled with data.

paul01609 20th Oct 2007 8:52 am

all the boxes are filles with the flash data,in the fw toolbox is has info in there but its in grey where all the rest of it is in white

Alright, now, this is the important part. Do whatever you did before to get the computer to detect the player as 'Unknown Device' (whichever button you held down, and with the switch in the 'off' position) Once that happens, click on that notification box and you will enter the driver installation process. There are several steps you have to go through, but whatever you do, DON'T let it search for a driver or choose a driver!!! You want to guide it to that RockUSB driver in the folder I told you about before, which is inside the install folder of the updater program. Once you've loaded that driver, click on the update button in the updater program and it should work. If you don't understand any of these steps, don't guess, ask me for clarification.

paul01609 20th Oct 2007 10:29 am

sorry for taking so long i wiped my comp just to make shure no other driver was installed, when i connect to my comp says unkown device so i tried updating the driver and make shure its in the rockusb folder but it says it carnt find a better match than whas alreaady installed

Then you have to deliberately remove the driver it's using. Go into Device Manager while the player is connected and under the USB section you should see the Rockchip device listed. Right click on it and choose remove, then unplug the player and then re-connect it in the way you did before (power switch off, holding the button) It will then find the unknown device and you should then be able to install the proper driver. It's helpful to have the updater program running and loaded with the correct firmware so that when the driver is successfully loaded you can click 'update' and immediately update the firmware. One thing I forgot to say is that once its successfully updated, SAFELY remove it and then power it on, that's when the actual update takes place, BUT you must have a charged battery or be hooked up to AC, so after the update is done and you unplug the player, plug it into and ac adapter before you turn it on. After you turn it on, just wait, it will update by itself (not connected to the computer, so don't mess with it until its done.

paul01609 20th Oct 2007 12:14 pm

Ha, I was afraid it would come to that, but I didn't want to say anything until it was absolutely necessary because it didn't sound like you could handle it, but apparently I was wrong. I fixed one of my players that way too.

Just out of curiosity, when you 'chipped' it, did the updater program recognize it without having to load the RockUSB driver?

Anyway, glad you got it back. See how easy it is???

paul01609 20th Oct 2007 2:20 pm

no it came up rockusb detected then i installed the drivers,i was about to give up on it and keep it for parts when i was doing the twezer trick it went in to usb storage mode again so i gave it one last chance then it worked, took me all of 3mins max

Me too. I sat with a dead player for a couple of weeks (an RM100). No matter what pins I shorted it didn't seem like it would go into upgrade mode. I'm surprised I didn't fry something with all the shorting I was doing, but one day I must have hit it just right and the screen went from black to white, I installed the driver, and got my player back.

Anyway, you've paid your dues, good job!

paul01609 20th Oct 2007 2:43 pm

thx m8 now i just need to find out how to put movies on the frigging thing lol, says it play avi but nothing seems to work, and thank you for all your time and help
