Default ATTN: ctw500 gurus!

After a couple of years of ownership of an off-brand player with a critical flaw (down button functions like a second up button), I found this site and decided to try some firmware updates. Now I have a truly dead player (not recognized by windows any longer and screen only flickers black on power up) I ask for help.

Before the attempted upgrade I learned this much from settings:

ctw500_s75
9.0.43

website where item was purchased: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SV-1620-2GB
manufacturer website: http://www.seal-usa.net/Eng/products/mp4/1620/1620.htm

I am using amv convert tool 4.0 for the firmware updates. The last update I performed using a file I more or less guessed at compatibility (I opened the player and the board has no ID number on it, the chip says CTW500 with a N or Z written across the chip in grease pen).

I'm hoping one of you guru's will bail me out. I'm planning to try tadad1's reset technique for the next firmware attempt, but I need help identifying the correct firmware.

Flip the board over, look under the LCD, etc.

Otherwise you're going to have to try a whole lot of firmware:

Sorry it took me so long to reply! I've seen this site, been on it quite a bit, it even looks like it's had a revamping in the last week since I started browsing it. However, I can't get the download links to work. Has anyone had any success on this site recently?

Short of desodering the LCD from the board to check beneath it, I have checked every inch of the board, I simply can't identify the board ID. I was planning to just do a trial and error with the firmware, but I can't get any of the download links from the site you mentioned to work.
