Default Solder on memory chip - cause of problem?

I posted in another thread on here that I've got a dead player. I've opened it up and started going about the dead player guide, but then I noticed that the flash memory chip has a small ball of solder on 3 of the leads (connecting them). The device is stuck in the 'perpetual hourglass' state, and I've already verified that it is one of the 'fake' models which has an incorectly advertised storage capacity (4Gb vs 1Gb). Might this be the cause of (some) of the problems or is this how they designed this thing?

What part number is it, and which 3 pins are connected together?
