Okay, so an interesting update: I started copying oodles of stuff to it, and it got to 928mb and stopped. In My Computer, it has gone back to saying it's only 928 mb as well, so i'm thinking that i just have a hacked 1gb chip. But i'm going to try again...

The best way to determine the size of your player's memory chip is to open it up and find what chip model it has. That will determine what memory chip it has.

lol that's what i ended up doing. Mine's a Dynix (related to hynix?) d27uag8t2mtr. Says 16g on it, but according to all the google sites it's a 1gb chip, and if I make the partition any bigger than that, the player won't read anything from it, so I'm now pretty sure that it's 1gb. (thanks, Binh)

Oh well... 1gb player that plays videos for 20 bucks... i guess that's not bad.

Default Linux Lsusb

I dunno if this helps but in Linux you can just do a lsusb (there are tons of livecds out there that will give you a console to type this!)

in mine I just typed
lsusb

root@1:~# lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 10d6:1101 Actions Semiconductor Co., Ltd D-Wave 2GB MP4 Player / AK1025 MP3/MP4 Player
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

note the important parts of the 16GB MP3/4 player I have
10d6:1101 shows me the necessary identification 4 digit codes to identify it!

so pretty much

10d6:1101 Actions Semiconductor Co., Ltd D-Wave 2GB MP4 Player / AK1025 MP3/MP4 Player

the rest are empty usb spots on my computer.

SO I know right away since it identifies itself as a 2 meg mine is defiantly been modified!

I think I will post a post on how to identify with linux

Thanks, i'll try that. I think I still have an experimental debian server lying around somewhere...
haha in windows, it identifies itself as all kinds of different things, depending on the program. So far i've gotten everything from 8 gb to 4gb to 2gb to -21mb, whatever that's supposed to mean. Didn't think of looking at the usb identification in linux, though...

UPDATE:
ok, so I tried it, and it identifies as an 8gb player. I'm guessing this is because of the new Actions 2025 chip, or the new firmware.
but thanks anyway, it was a good idea

NEW 8GB MP3 MP4 Slim 4th Gen Player FM Media Video USB - eBay (item 260442576051 end time Aug-06-09 07:16:55 PDT)

At least it looks nice.

I got the similar 8GB one from "shopping-wang2008" ebay seller. I am not sure whether it's really 8GB or not
This is my first buy from ebay.com and after so much of struggle to save that 20$. I really feel bad as all my hard earned gone waste if it's not 8GB.
everyone in my school has original nano and it's always my dream to buy one, but I can't offer one..so, I went for this look alike model..just to make myself happier
Do we have any firmware for this model as mine says act2025e_v54, 9.5.54 version?
