Funny co-incidence but I was just messing today with the firmware on my player on got the exact same problem, red screen and deleting the firmware, then I tried to recover the player using the recovery tool and the player wasn't even recognised by the usb.
I was just trying to figure out how the open the player when I noticed a reset hole, I just pushed a paper clip end in it and the player reset and I then used the recovery tool to get the firmware partition back and the player is now fixed again. So it is possible to fix.

buscopan, does your player have a reset hole on the side somewhere?
