Dead Chipod Touch
 

I bought one of the "32GB" Chinese iPod Touch clones from eBay.

As is common with these, apparently, it was fraudulently described as a 32GB device when in fact it only had a 4G memory in it. I sent a rather nasty email complete with links to several articles about this scam, saying I was now aware that this was a fraud, not a faulty MP4 player, and would seek immediate redress via Paypal and report him as a scammer etc, unless he gave me a refund. I asked for $20 back (of my $40), thinking that $20 was a reasonable price for a 4G touch screen player that supports avi and flv.

He gave me my $20, I then closed the Paypal complaint, which unfortunately cuts off all further avenue of complaints with them.

The day after I closed the complaint, the player bricked.

It has a small reset button on the side which needs to be pressed with a pin or paperclip, which worked the first couple of times the thing hung, but now all it does is momentarily turn the device off.

Here is what I get...

Plug the device into a USB port, it turns on and gives a Welcome screen.
... it stays like that for ever...
The moment I unplug it, the device turns off, never having booted up.

Since I've now waived my rights with Paypal to further compensation, I guess I'm pretty screwed now if I can't fix it myself.

This is a very common player on eBay, there are hundreds just like it being sold. (See the picture).

I've read the guide to unbricking an MP4 player but I wanted to check first if the firmware for this model is available (and if so... link?) and if that procedure (of shorting the chip's terminals) is applicable given that this thing has a reset button which possibly does the same thing...

Can anyone advise?
