Default Dead battery?

I've had an tpsimmtron.com mpx player for about 2 years. It was meant to be 4Gb, but was somewhat less than 2Gb, but I managed to work around the file problems fine. Recently, I have been unable to charge it, but I am not certain it is the player rather than the charger USB connection, which has always seemed a little dodgy. The net effect is, the battery is empty, and I can't charge it. If I connect to the PC it tells me the USB device is unrecognised.

Is 2 years a plausible time for the battery to die? (moderate usage, probably charging about once or twice a week). If so, is there anything I can do? I have never opened this player - it only has two tiny screws on the smallest side of the box.
