Half-dead S1 player
I've been given an old generic S1. It's present on the s1mp3 wiki with this picture and the first example in this page; the only difference is mine is rebranded "Blue sky".
I suspect it's been improperly formatted, via the computer instead of its special utility. It powers on, but always says "NO MUSIC" even if it does contain mp3 files; in that condition, it's unresponsive to button input. It also shows up as a thumbdrive when connected, and the drive contains several folders (".fseventsd", ".Spotlight-V100", ".Trashes") that make me think the damage has been done by a clueless Mac user. Other than the mac files, there are no others (hidden or otherwise). According to this old review of a similar player, restoring it requires a "fixtool", but I don't know which to get and where to find one. So I tried the "update program" available for download from s1mp3, as well as a newer version I got from that page in the second wiki link, but neither can see it. S1fwx can't either. I also tried keeping the play button pressed while plugging it in, and it made absolutely no difference. If this player was stone dead I'd resign to failure and toss it in the trash, but the fact that it powers on and works as a thumbdrive makes me retain some hope. Can I fix it in any way? Thanks. |
