Rk2738
Hello everybody!
I recently purchased an e-book (a chinese unbranded one) whose firmware doesn't seem to be good enough for my purposes...I bought it just to be able to read books but it seems that when you zoom-in there are problems ,either with the scrolling of the page, or even with the turning of the pages...Not to mention the sluggishness... Despite having searched the whole forum and tried to update the firmware of this device with both skytex and MiGear firmware, I always get stuck when I press "Switch"... I think that I'm missing a USB driver... However, I managed to make the hidden partitions appear (thanks to Nicolas72) but there is always the same problem... So, my questions are -Is it possible that I have bought something equipped with new chipset ???(The chip inside the device reads RK2738 and googling hasn't heped a lot thus far. I had to uncrew the cover to see what the chipset was because in the system information it just says "Rockchip") -Do I have any chance of ever finding a suitable firmware? or a USB driver to continue the firmware upadtes of either the skytex one or the MiGear???? (The USB driver found inside the zip files of both firware packages doesn;t seem to work for me. I'm quite experienced with upadting drivers but this one has taken a toll on me!!!) Every opinion will be much appreciated! Nikolas, Hellas |
Same problem
Hi there, Have you managed to find a driver yet? I have been trying everything to get my unbranded Chinese reader back online, now Ive cracked it open and saw that I also have the 2738 chip... still looking for the usb driver.
|
Unfortunately I've tried almost every possible combination an available downloadable material, and still nothing works...I 'm going to give another try using Windows 7 (instead of XP)...
If I find a way to do it, I'll send you a message! |
Thanks for getting back to me. - think the problem is that our chips are too new... Well just have to wait a Couple of months for the new drivers to appear. I ve tried all the current drivers on Both xp and win7 and on various different pcs. If I Find anything new Ill let you know. chee

Hello,
I'm looking for the driver as well. Anybody found it yet? |
Nope Nothing yet. Maybe someone over at the mp4 forums could find a driver... I think there are a number of helpfull manufacturing reps there...
|
I've sent an email to Rockchip, but they told me that they just make the chips.
Then I found one factory in Senghey (or something like that) in China, but still no answer. This is a tuff one guys. |
Indeed...
But sooner or later those products containing this chip will swarm the market, so there is still a hope that somebody will come up with a solution |
Hello again,
I found this post on another forum: "Using the needle trick for RK27 or RK28 devices. (look up at youtube or lots of tutorial over internet) finally I have a class for RK28USB with VID_2207 & PID_273A. With this codes from USB the drivers for RK28 devices works. Additionally to this trick the battery must be desolded because this device has no power off bottom to be completely disconnected. Now I just need an appropriate bootloader to put in the device and a correct firmware. The correct firmware I have it, becuse I have a backup copy of my original. I will continue reporting my advances ..." Anybody knows what this means and does it help on our case. P.S. Sorry to the original poster (harrysmith) but if it really means some progress with this problem i think it should be shared allover this kind of forums. |
I asked Harrysmith for additional instrutions and this is what he replied:
"Atreyu, lok in you tube "how to ubrick apad" and in the part 5 video is the way to do it. I needed to unsolder the battery as thios device has no real power buttom. Once you do it your device will be detected as VID_2207 & PID_273A. If the driver is not detected use a generic rk281x of other manufacturer but changing in the .inf file the vid and pid for the ones I mentioned above. There are two sections in the driver information, change only the one in the MSC section. After doing that the device will be in rock usb mode or MSC mode and it will be possible to install the firmware. My problem now is that I have no correct firmware. I have a backup of the two partitions that appear when you use the htc0001.tag file. Nevertheless, I have no correct bootloader I suppose. I have tried several 2729 but without success. I hove soon somebody with this device can make a backup copy of the full firmware image. I hope this information will help. I know that lots of people is having this problem." I'll be following this steps on the coming weekend, but there is still the problem he told about the bootloader. Still with this, we can get a little bit forward to solving this issue. P.S. Harrysmith tryed to register himself in this forum, but he never received the confirmation mail. So, if any admin see this, it would be nice to check this out. |
Hi Atreyu, I have exactly the same problem as yours. Did you have any luck thereafter? Do let me know. Shall keep you updated incase I come across any solution. Thanks. -)
|
Still havent found what i'm looking for (where did I hear this?)
Havent had the time to try harrysmiths mid-solution. |

I managed to do the needle trick (unsoldered the battery) and get the USB device recognized. I am using the Primer driver, modified as per following earlier instruction: If the driver is not detected use a generic rk281x of other manufacturer but changing in the .inf file the vid and pid for the ones I mentioned above. But I am not able to see any drives, So how do I get to the hidden folder and instalkl the image? Any ideas, anyonne? |
Hello,
My ebook is based on rk2738. http://www.freeimagehosting.net/t/d1121.jpg Larger view :d1121.jpg at Free Image Hosting The firmware SKYTEX primer don't work on it !!! I have update my ebook with RK28Upgrade v1.27 I have tweak the setting.ini in Upgade Tool folder to match my device. Code:
[DEVICE_ID]If you have "download boot fail" error message REBOOT your computer ! Finally i have restore my original firmware. Fortunately have backup the 3 partition of my ebook. To make firmware *.bin file i go to my linux computer and make : Code:
mkdir myfirmware2shared - download Ebook-2738.img.zip If you failed update don't remove battery just short pins 29 and 30 on Hynix and plug usb. It is describe in post : http://mympx.org/forum/dead-players/...y-guide-8.html |
Hello Chupito,
It seems that you are finally the anwser to our problems. How do I know the vid and pid from my reader so that I can change the driver and upgrade tool. Thanx |
I have used SniffUsb 2.0 SniffUSB 2.0 for Windows XP
In mass storage mode you can view [MSC_ID] In switch mode you can view [DEVICE_ID] |
My bad luck, I have windows 7.
But I think the program still works, because in the begining it says "loading XP driver" and it shows me all my other usb devices. The problem is that I cant find the ebook. Can you send me your .inf and .ini modified? Or post it within the forum post? Thanx |

Thanx,
It keeps telling that the driver is not found in the folder. It can really be the VID and PID problem. If anyone could put post it here it would be great. Anyway, thanx once again |
FINALLY !!!!!! :)
After several months it lives again. Thanks Chupito and Harrysmith (from another site) and all that tryed to solve this out. So, my steps: 1- Open the device and checked that in fact was a RK2738 chip 2- Open RK28upgrade 1.27 with the alterated .inf (driver) and .ini (RK28upgrade 1.27) to VID=0x2207 and PID=0x273A you can also download the already driver prepared from chupito a few post above. It is for Win7 but if you have XP or other just make the changes like I said. 3- With a small (really small) screwdriver short the 29 and 30 pins of the Hyvix chip like its done here: http://mympx.org/forum/dead-players/...y-guide-8.html 4- With the screwdriver touching both 29 and 30 pins, connect the usb cable to the ebook reader. IMPORTANT: you have to keep shorting the pins while inserting the usb plug on the reader. Now wait for the PC to recognize RK28usb. If it says unrecognized probably is because you arent shorting the pins at the same time. 5- After it recognizes RK28usb you can let the screwdriver out of the pins and keeping the usb cable on, open RK28upgrade 1.27. 6- Click on the "image path" button and choose the img file. Chupito provided with his file above, wich worked for me. 7- Now click on "upgrade", wait and it's done :) |
Fantastic. This worked a treat on my MeBook 4gb that I stupidly flashed with the Primer Firmware Upgrade.
Mine has the following chips: 1x Samsung 804 K9HBG08U1M 1x Rockchip RK2738 1x Infineon HYB39S2561600T-7 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w...204_180215.jpg seeing that the Samsung 804 is a 40 pin chip I tried shorting the pins as shown in this diagram whilst plugging in. http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/a...ola/dead11.jpg Woohoo - One RK28xx device that came up... at that moment I stopped shorting the pins and then installed the firmware that chupito57 loaded. Thanks for the tip Chupito57 --- really good work |
Need your help, guys...
Hi there!
First time, I've made everything the same way as duxxyuk and other folks and FW update procedure went just fine. I've used chupito57's FW. But I found that Ukrainian language in this FW is totally useless (the problem with encoding - all characters were like abracadabra). So I decided to look for another FW. On the 4PDA forum (Russian) I've finally found the one I was looking for. And started the upgrade procedure: 1. Loaded FW into Upgrade tool (RK28Upgrade v1.27) 2. Then pressed "Switch" 3. After a while pressed "Upgrade" Upgrade started but in a few seconds I've received error message. Now, the problem is that every time I plug-in the device, Windows (Windows 7, Ultimate, 64 bit) recognize it as "Unknown Device" under USB Controller tree. I was disconnecting all the additional USB equipment (except keyboard and mouse of course :)), changing the USB cables without any luck... :( I will appreciate any suggestions from your side... Thank you in advance! |
Hi Guys,
I made everything as explained. My e-reader started but the buttons are not working. I presume that the problem is in the firmware. My e-book is E032H with the RK2738 chip. If someone has this firmware, I will be very thankful to share it with me. Thanks for your help and suggestions. |
hey thanks to Chupito57 & Atreyu i got my ebook back to life

Can you tell us what you did to bring your ebook back to life? |
Hi Binh@MyMPx, I just followed the steps written here.
I had bricked my ebook trying to upgrade with SKYTEX - PRIMER ROM Had to wait patiently for someone to come out with the solution and Chupito finally did! Atreyu put the procedure down systematically! Thanks! Cheers! Quote:

 Sooooooooo
Having read all the posts above I think that there is still hope... But unfortunately I am not really sure about something and I'm not going to begin playing with my ebook before I am completely assured! Firstly, I would like to ask Atreyu ; Is the firmware by Chupito57 a differnent (newer) one than the one preinstalled??? I am asking this because my e-book is working (not bricked) and I want to know if all this screwdriving stuff is worthwhile or even necessesary. Secondly; Since our friend SyavsoN had a problem with the Ukrainian language, do you think it is possible that I will have with Greek as well? )- I'm greek :) not geek |
Hi guys...I also have a rk2738 ebook reader that i bought from ebay.To be more specific that's the device I am talking about :
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices The firmware's name is rockchip v1.0.5.However I have a problem with the letters' formatting on epub and mobi files. For example, all words in italics appear in bold letters and after them the sentence continues in the next line. I am looking for people who have the device with the same firmware and face this problem. Are there any updated firmwares that solve it? I was thinking about the primer firmware but I have come to the conclusion that it's not compatible and will brick the device. Any advice on the matter is more than welcome. Thank you... |
E-book reader RK2738
Hello Everybody,
I bought this one (E032H 7" LCD E-Book Reader Media Player w/ Voice Recorder/FM/AV-Out/TF Slot (4GB Flash) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme) and after 1 day the thing died. I tried to install the OS as explained and the E-book was alive again but the buttons are not available. I think because this OS is not for this e-book. If anyone has an idea how to repair my e-book, please help! Thank you very much. |
I just wanted to say thanks to Chupito57 I was able to get by ebook reader working again! I bricked it upgrading the firmware from 1.05 to 1.10 but it was for an RK2729. Whoops...
Fortunately I was able to use the firmware provided by Chupito57 to get 1.05 back again If anybody knows of a later version that works with this chipset I'd love to know Thanks Again |
Just wanted to add my thanks to this thread and a firmware pressie for those interested :)
I have a Mebook 7 inch 4gb with chipset RK2738. I bricked it with the skytex firmware and after hours of searching came across this thread and another hour or two of tinkering and messing around trying to follow these instructions finally got it back up and running with the 2738.img posted on here. Anyway i was so glad i was back up and running but not happy with the new (old) look ereader software, i wanted my old one back, and here it is! I think you'll find it much nicer to look at, with scrolling book titles etc. Anyway try it and see. Its a simple upgrade with the usual RK28DM Setup file, no shorting of pins if you're already up and running. Version is 1.1.0 to replace 1.0.5. Image name is RK2738-E001-NewUI-Nofm-TTS-DOCsupport-Aiteqi(chinese)-20111021. Its 42mb compressed and 154mb extracted - use 7zip or winrar or whatever you like to use to extract files. Download here RK2738_E001_NewUI_Nofm_TTS_DOCsupport_Ai....rar |
Well, all I have to say is THANK YOU n0rthstar...
I am going to check this new version and I will post feedback! |
Thank you. But my ebook reader is dead (hardware)

Finally i have found the correct tag to view hidden partition --> rk2738.tag
I make one image with rk28image.exe. You can test if you want. RK2738sdk v1.1.1 My reader is touch but no FM. MEBOOK TOUCH clone ? http://www.2shared.com/file/SgebMDqz...-V111-201.html |
