Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!

In reply to MPx Junkie:
Yes, I emailed Admin the lengthy message thread I've had with Uxcell, giving details of the purchase and actions taken to explore the problem.

Uxcell are being responsive enough via email, have asked that the player be sent back, but won't commit to a statement about what the capacity of the player should be in unambiguous terms that can't be misunderstood, such as 2 GigaBytes and not the potentially misleading 2GB.

I'm still not sure if I should send it back - a couple of reasons.
The cost and delay and the chance of it getting 'lost' or ignored.
The likelyhood of a replacement being exactly the same. The damning thing from my viewpoint is the deliberate disparity between the size in the partition table (228 Megabytes) and the layout of the FAT file allocation table (2 Gigabytes) - just like those on eBay which have been confirmed as a deliberate deception.

I agree with you Kinkell, I have almost the same situation, Osmium 1GB player which showed me messages like "format error", while I haven't formated it, but then I have only 103 MB  . These chinese players are electronical bull shit, sold in 99,99% cases with hacked memory chips, even I think that the mark written on memory chip is nothing else but fake :!: , and it's time also for e-bay to stop promoting these things.

As I stated above I was concerned after reading your post about issues with your U-O but so far everything is good with my 2 i just got except that one of the chargers for the outlet does not power on and my player does not seem to charge thruogh my usb only through the wall. so now I need to find another wall charger as one charger goes to my step daughter and I want to be able to charge my player when shes not at our house. I put a movie on and 30+ mp3s and still showed lots of room. I still have yet to format and will wait till I have an issue...

Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!

Hello Dawn,
Don't format it - just keep adding files, filling up the player, and checking that the files play or view OK.
30 MP3s is only about 120 megabytes - plus whatever the size of the movie is, this is a lot less than the expected size of 2 Gigabytes.
The documentation says that the player supports just one folder level, and no more than 99 files per folder, so create a number of folders at the root, and keep copying your MP3s or movies into them, no more than 99 files per folder.
As you go, use Windows explorer to list the files in each folder, check the names are not being corrupted, and see how much space has been used so far.
When it gets to over say 500 megabytes stored, play each file or movie in turn - at least a few seconds at the beginning of each to check they are OK.
The trick is to fill the space right up and check that all the files - music or movies - play OK.
Good luck.

I would disagree with you on this Zarko. It is not realistic to say that "99.99% cases with hacked memory chips". This is true with 4GB players, but you can't say that with all players.

Reading from your message, you also mention "eBay" as well. I'm confused, did you buy your player from UXcell directly or from another seller on eBay? I've read your message in this thread here: http://www.mympxplayer.org/viewtopic.php?p=12178.

You said the following:

"This is a picture of that player
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190048136914
".

Following the link, it's actually to a seller called "ed2city" which isn't connected to UXcell at all.

Can you please confirm whether your player is in fact a player bought from UXcell or from someone else? If from UXcell, can you please provide me with the order number? I can check this with UXcell for you.

I thought this was a warning sign in ebay to not buy a player...
It also says up above under the warning damages caused by the follwing mishandling og the player are not covered by the warrantee.
So what i get from that is that if i format my player to see if its hacked its no longer under warrantee...
I got these 2 units from this site because it was supposed to be trusted and i got screwed by ebay...
So I am not touching them till they are charged and i read further on here on what to do... I hope that they really are 2 GB and not being misrepresented as some thing less...

1. Did you order your player from their website? YES
2. What is your order number? ORD20061229645
3. When did you order it? Dec 29th 2006

dawniec99,

This is the FIRST TIME I've heard of a problem with memory size on an UXcell player. Prior to this thread, I have never heard of any problems with UXcell player memory. You should be able to format the player fine no problems.

Re: Memory issues with 2GB Osmium player

Have a look at UXcell's response here: http://www.mympxplayer.org/viewtopic.php?p=18196.

Kinkell,

UXcell has asked if you can resend the product back to them, they will check it and send you a replacement. Please also be double, double sure that the problem is in fact with the player's memory. As the memory was manufactured by another supplier, it was a problem that they could not control and a problem by the supplier instead of UXcell instead.

I do hope that you understand this and that this doesn't tarnish the reputation of UXcell as being a good manfuacturer. They have sold lots and lots of these players. As nothing is perfect, there will be situations where a few will 'slip' through. It's the process to identify the problem and resolve the problem as soon as possible is that's more important now.

I have discussed with UXcell. They said to send information to info@uxcell.com. They will look out for your email (as I also have forwarded them your details).

If you can return the player and let's see how UXcell does in terms of replacing it promptly with a non-faulty memory chip.

Update : Memory issues with 2GB Osmium player

Some progress on the problem I reported with the 2GB Osmium that I bought from Uxcell just before Christmas.
First a recap of the story so far:
Bought the player, tracked and delivered efficiently, good service from Uxcell. Looking good.
It worked well and seemed OK, with limited use, some odd crashes, but then showed repeatable problems when filling it up and saving over about 230Megabytes of files. Analysis showed it was really 256Megabytes made to look like like 2GBytes as had/has been happening a lot on eBay.
But it was a great little player, worked well after re-partitioning, I didn't want the hassle and uncertainty of returning it - even though Uxcell had been very responsive to the problem, suggesting things to try (reformatting) and asking that I return it for replacement.
I have to say - I thought I'd get exactly the same back, so I wasn't keen to return it, maybe lose it etc.

Then I found this forum - and posted some info about the problem - and got a very quick response from Admin (Binh Tang) saying that experience with Uxcell was generally good and that he would get Keith Wong of Uxcell on the case to investigate.
They convinced me that the player should genuinely be 2Gbytes and that they had checked similar ones in stock and they were OK and that I should return it for investigation and replacement.
Again - Uxcell and Binh were very responsive and helpful.
I returned the Osmium on 12Jan07 with tracked delivery marked for Keith's attention.
After 2 weeks I queried Keith Wong @ Uxcell to see if it had arrived - it hadn't. It may have by now - I'm not sure, I haven't enquired again.
Keith immediatelyarranged for a replacement to be despatched anyway, and I now have an email confirming despatch with the order number and tracking number. Again - good service by Uxcell.

I am going to be REALLY interested to see how it goes, and whether the replacement gives me the 2Gbytes space that I expected and paid for.

Watch this space - I'll keep you posted!

RESULT! Memory issues with 2GB Osmium player

Some good news!
The replacement Osmium 2GB player arrived yesterday, just one week after Keith @ Uxcell said he had authorised the replacement based on me saying I'd returned the original.
And it really is 2Gbytes this time! Unlike the 230Mbytes of the first one that was received. I've filled it full to over 1.9Gbytes with MP3s, WMAs, JPGs etc and there is no file or directory corruption!
The only downside I've noticed so far is that this replacement does not work on all my USB 2.0 ports. My monitor has a built-in hub and it doesn't work on these, but it's OK on the ports on the front of the system unit - though the throughput is nothing like USB 2.0 speed. But not a huge problem as long as it doesn't go bad.
The previous Osmium worked at a good speed on all ports.

I'd like to say a special thank you to Keith @ Uxcell and Binh for responding to the problem and encouraging me to return the original for replacement - despite the 6.55 GPB carriage cost.
It does look like Uxcell is a reputable supplier that in this case was let down by one of their suppliers.

Also arriving yesterday to a colleague at work was a 4GB iNano clone, like the iPlatinum, bought off eBay, which was genuine 4Gbytes, all for 30 GPB! So not all players are not what they seem!
