Memory issues with 2GB Osmium player
I'm disappointed that Uxcell is also doing what the eBay MP4 size scammers are doing.
In most respects, the Osmium is a great little player which I'm pretty happy with - except the memory size is misrepresented by a hacked partition table and careful product descriptions. Conventionally, 2GB is 2 GigaBytes, but in this case it's actually 2 GigaBits.
The 2GB Osmium I bought shows as 2 GigaBytes capacity as a USB drive in Windows, but the real capacity is actually 228 MegaBytes.
With the original partition table, storing more data than 230 megabytes overwrites existing files and corrupts them.
Uxcell have offered to replace it, but the end result will be the same. It's not faulty - just not what was excpected from the product descriptions.
Does anyone else have an Osmium that will store 2 GigaBytes of data?

Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!
Replace it with the same player?? That's not good. I ordered a Glacier from them. If this thing turns out to have only 228MB, I certainly do not want it replaced by the same thing with the same problem! Have you asked them about replacing with a different model or a complete refund of your investment? Remember, just because a seller sells fraudulent players, doesn't necessarily mean they,re scammers. They could have gotten scammed by their suppliers Its how they react once they find out that proves the case!

Kinkell,
That's the first time I've heard about this. Definately an issue and I will get someone from UXcell to investigate as well as we don't want this happening.
Please double check and CONFIRM that this is definately an issue with your player as your claim is serious. They are a good sponsor of this site and I discussed with them the issue of hacked players and as you notice on their site, they don't sell any 4GB players. However, your claim is seriously going to affect UXcell on this site as it's a well trusted supplier. Ok, it's not 'hacked' but instead using "gigabits" instead of "gigBYTES" is still something worth following up. The last thing we want is a serious claim like this to tarnish a good relationship between UXcell and us if it's not true. So please double check your player's capacity.
Now, some questions for you:
1. Did you order your player from their website?
2. What is your order number?
3. When did you order it?
If you can supply me answers to my questions above, I'll try to chase it up for you.

Well, my Glaciers are both 1GB, thus nearly 1024 megabytes minus the space for the software (secured part). Uxcell doesn't advertise with Gb -gigabits, but always use GB for gigabytes. Your memory might be bad, having a failure. Or you had your drive parted in 2 with an encrypted part, not showing? Happens sometimes on these players. You might want to check the player's settings for that.

Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!
I just recieved my Uxcell Osmium today and decided to get on a see andthing in regards to it before I messed with it too much (want to get it fully charged first) I am a little leary after reading this topic as the first thing I read when I get by 2 U-O's is the green warning note... and #2 is Please do not attempt to format the MP3/Mp4 player... it has already been formatted for proper usage.
I thought this was a warning sign in ebay to not buy a player...
It also says up above under the warning damages caused by the follwing mishandling og the player are not covered by the warrantee.
So what i get from that is that if i format my player to see if its hacked its no longer under warrantee...
I got these 2 units from this site because it was supposed to be trusted and i got screwed by ebay...
So I am not touching them till they are charged and i read further on here on what to do... I hope that they really are 2 GB and not being misrepresented as some thing less...
1. Did you order your player from their website? YES
2. What is your order number? ORD20061229645
3. When did you order it? Dec 29th 2006

Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!
The supplied format / partition utility shows 228MB for the 2GB Osmium player.
I can't paste the screenshot here - it's text only - but here is what Windows says:
C:\>chkdsk i:
The type of the file system is FAT.
Volume Serial Number is 12D5-3058
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.
239,181,824 bytes total disk space.
102,400 bytes in 15 hidden files.
45,056 bytes in 11 folders.
237,805,568 bytes in 53 files.
1,228,800 bytes available on disk.
4,096 bytes in each allocation unit.
58,394 total allocation units on disk.
300 allocation units available on disk.

Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!
For anyone who would like to check out their capacity:
The way I checked the player, having discovered that as I filled it up above a certain size, was to delete all the files, add about 50 megabytes worth at a time, using only one level of folder with less than 8-character filename and less than 99 files per folder, and check by playing the first part of each track and by checking the file directory with Windows Explorer.
The 228 megabyte limit before files would not play and filenames were corrupted was repeatable.
I only formatted it, with the supplied utility, when Uxcell said in their email to do so.
The result was just the same as before.
Checking (but not changing) the partition size both with the supplied utility, and Windows disk manager showed that the capacity was actually 228 megabytes, not the 2 Gigabytes that the file allocataion table had been manipulated to show.
Despite me trying carefully to ask Uxcell to confirm the size should be 2 gigabytes, they have carefully avoided doing so.
It's a shame really, as it's actually quite a nice little player - it's very good in all other respects.
Would I have bought it if it had been advertised as 256 megabytes - probably not - I was really looking for something a bit bigger, to save having to swap out tracks quite as much.

What a bummer, looks like they put a Rhodium board in your Osmium? They are a bit strange in conversations, seem to use a lot of standard answers to handle questions (please tune radio in other location, please use other headphones). I wouldn't settle for anything less than another real 2 gigabyte one, and they should compensate for all the extra shipping too.

Kinkell, answering the 3 questions the Admin asked could speed things up.

Re: Shame on you, Uxcell!
There's only one way I know of to really tell. Did you do a double low level format using the mp3 utility with an encrypt/partition pass, as described in the hacked player thread?
