Does Glacier support USB 2.0??
 

Now there's really just -one- thing I don't like about my Glacier... transfers are slow (215MB file is taking 27 min.). I keep getting an alert bubble from Windows about "The device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB 2.0 port". Then if you click on the bubble it shows "USB Root Hub 8 ports". I have no external hub, but I tried the ports in the front and the back of the computer with the same results.

I know I must have USB 2.0 because its a new Intel P4 mboard, AND because transfers were faster (and with no such alert bubble) with my Nano clone. I changed nothing in my configs since I got rid of the Nano clone, which leads me to suspect the culprit must be the Glacier? Is it so named because it appears to be "frozen" during transfers?!

Is your usb installed as a 2.0 root hub in device manager? Which driver is the board using for usb, a microsoft one or the manufacturer's original? What I remember from the glaciers I got was transfer was slow, but way better after a clean format of the player (save the folders on it or recreate them after). Never got the warning about a slow connection, songs copied to the player in about 2-4 seconds. 7MB per minute isn't even usb 1.0, looks like something is corrupting the data transfer. Any other devices on usb ports, you might want to try other ports for those or a temp. removal of other usb devices and see what gives.

michiganjfrog, If the player is running 9.0.XX series firmware then it will be USB 2.0 (HS) which was introduced in the ATJ209X series of chips. If you look in Device Manager under "Disk Drives" the player should be listed as "USB 2.0 (HS) Flash Disk USB Device"

I have an Intel P4 motherboard. In Device Manager, under the section "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" I have these subsections:

Intel 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller (x 4)
Intel 82801EB USB2Enhanced Controller (x 1)
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub (x 5)

All use driver version: 5.1.2600.0 (default of XP Pro, I'm assuming), except for the Universal Host Controllers, which use driver version: 5.0.1006.

Under Disk Drives, "USB 2.0 (HS) Flash Disk Device" the driver ver. is: 5.1.2535.0


I have formatted the drive as described in detail in another message, but was unable to low level format it. Which I'm assuming is probably due to the MP3 Tools not (yet?) being fully compatible with this player. There is something in the instructions that came with the Glacier that said not to format it! (Which only makes me want to format it more, because of those eBay scammers that say that to hide their hacked firmware....).

NOTE: It seems that when I click on the alert bubble that says I can do faster USB, and choose a root hub in the list, I get my USB 2.0! (Takes seconds to transfer the 215mb file). Thing is, I never got alert bubbles or had to choose a "root hub", with my old nano clone. I wish I didn't have to fiddle with this each time! (n.b. I have no other USB devices connected, except my mouse, which is kind of necessary).

Yes, in device manager it says its a USB 2.0 device.

I noticed in the Policies tab under DM, it says "Optimize for quick removal", which explains
you can disconnect the device withut using the Safe Removal icon. Do you feel this is true? Maybe that's why people were bricking their players, because they chose the "Performance" option here?
