Just ordered a Glacier from Uxcell website
 

Yesterday, I just ordered the Glacier from the Uxcell website, but then found this forum. I should've done my research earlier, but only now have I found out about the problems with the battery and charging. From what I have gathered, it would seem people have ordered it sometime early end of December/January.

Needless to say, I'm really worried that the Glacier I'll get will come with these defects. I can't really afford to send the thing back if it does have problems so...

Any suggestions on what to do? Is there any way I can cancel my order? Or better yet, is there some way to confirm that my Glacier won't have these problems?

The ones posting here are the ones having trouble, that are usually the only posters. 1000ths of these units have been sold worldwide, there will always be a small percentage that will fail soon, even come dead on arrival, as with any hardware sold. The chance that you will be unlucky is small.

I also ordered an 2 GB Glacier from Uxcell. I hope to receive it soon. And I bought on Ebay a 1700mAh battery, when everything works well, the sky will be the limit.

Thanks for the reply! Well then, I sincerely hope that's the case. In any case, when I do receive my player I'll post a review of it.

WHOO HOO! I think I actually got a 2GB Glacier from uxcell! The Ebay seller was ceoshop1. I ran the disk utility and saw 2GB on both tabs. I formatted at both the high end and low end and still had 2GB on the memory. I've also loaded 300 MB of information so far, and I haven't had any problems playing the video or songs. Maybe I actually got a good one in the batch. Hopefully this seller has an inventory of good ones.

As promised, I will write a small review about the Glacier player.

Order the player went very easy. I bought it directly from the Uxcell website, and had a 10% discount. I made the payment with PayPal. I bought the player on 19 January, and it arrived on 30 January. 11 Days including 2 weekends. That is not bad at all.
The player was delivered in a box and not in a brown envellope as used by many Ebay sellers. The box included the player, USB cable, AC adapter, a white headset in Apple style, the usual manual and CD-rom with some software.

When I turned the player on, there was a nice Uxcell animation startup screen. The player was stuffed with some demo songs, videos and lyrics. First I connected the player to my PC, and it was recognised as a USB flash storage device. The instructions said not to format the player, but I wanted to verify the capacity. And yes, it was a true 2 GB player.
The next step was to transfer my music to the player. I used a unusual was to do this. First I made a new folder on my PC hard disk. Then I used the Flashshuffler software to fill the folder with song. In flashshuffler I used the option "random rename", and set the maximum map size to 1946Mb, the same capacity as the Glacier player. After the map was full with music, I copy and paste the music out of the map to the root of the Glacier. By doing this, I was hoping to skip the 99 files per map problem.
After the transfert, I restarted the player and it worked perfectly, and played all songs. The trick worked perfect.
The standard headset is not so bad at all, but you need to use earbuds to improve hte sound quality. I also used a original Apple headset, and the main difference was a deepr Bass.
The LCD display is very nice, bright and big enough to give all the information needed.
The main menu interface looks very nice, the submenu interface looks like the usual Chinese players.
The control buttons work very well, and the overall design is good.
During the night I charged the Battery using the AC adapter. Then the ultimate test started: how long will the stanard battery last?
I started the player at 05:30 AM, and I let it play nonstop when it was connected to a speaker set. It played........and played.........and played.........and played...........untill 04:00PM, so a total nonstop playing time 10 1/2 hours. The volume level was set at 20. I need to mention that it was 10 1/2 hours after the first charging. I guess it will become longer after a few charges more. A few days ago I ordered a 1700mAh battery, I am excited to know how long it will play then. I will keep you up to date.
I have read that some Glacier owners had problems with the battery. I noticed that it is very important to keep the battery cover closed. Because the cover pushes the battery against to 3 contact points in the player.
The capacity of 2 GB is enough for me. I converted tha mp3 files into WMA files with a bitrate of 64. By doing this the sound quality as still good, and the files are smaller. When I use the player capacity 100%, I can stuff 844 songs on it.
I would give the player a 8/10 score.

Just received the Glacier, everything so far seems to be in working order. Came in a brown paper bag, with everything in a small box. Firmware is 9.0.50, so no customizing.

'm charging it from the USB, after hearing horror stories about charging from the charger. It seems to be charging all right.

I'll write a proper review, after some usage.
