Default Glacier 2gb with usb problrms

Hi Guys,
Just got my Glacier and are very pleased with it but for one problem.
It wont connect as a USB 2 device.I know it is because Windows XP
identifies it as a USB 2 Flash device.
When plugged in it gives the message that it is a USB 2 device and please
plug it in to the correct port to take advantage of the increased speed.
I checked into what Device manager had done and it has it listed under the USB 1 root hub.
Im wondering if its a cable, cant seem to find a source for it.It seems to be much smaller than what cameras use.
I know cables for USB 1 and 2 are different.I think USB 2 one should be Shielded. All my usual USB 2 cables have the metal parts at each end
connected together. However the cable supplied with my Glacier does not
have these connected.Does any Glacier owners cable have these two connected.
Hope someone can help,as the transfer rate is quite slow.
Les

Hi Les,

I have got a 2Gb Glacier to, it takes about 30 minutes to load the full 2 Gb of songs. The USB connection is also smaller than the usual USB cable on ChiPods.

Same here like you guys, 2 Glaciers 2.0 usb version, usb ports on computer are 2.0, sd-cardreader pumps through songs in seconds over these ports, but the Glaciers won't go over 800kB/sec. Cable has metal parts around the connector on both ends, if that's what you mean. Maybe the internals to these aren't connected in the player itself? Weird, as I believe the 2 glaciers I had before transfered files way faster.

If you do the research, I wrote about my USB 2.0 problems with the Glacier long before this. Try this: when the bubble pops up to tell you that your USB could be faster, click on it, you'll see a list of USB hubs, select another free one, and it should connect at 2.0 speeds.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Michiganjfrog.Saw your post but it didnt help me though.
I think its either a Driver issue or a slight compatability with hardware.
Tried my on on a Dell laptop and it connected correctly to the USB 2
root hub.Have had problems with usb type connections before.
So i think the Glacier is alright.
By the way if i click on one of the suggested ports, it highlights it but nothing else happens. Thanks for your reply
Still very pleased with the glacier, money well spent.

I'm not convinced it isnt' the Glacier at fault, at least not in my case,
in trying to connect the Glaceier at USB 2.0. I tried the unit on other computers, same problem or worse. I tried other USB cables, no difference. Yet when I connect other mp3/mp4 players (or cameras) to my computer, no such problem. In fact, the FMP from UXcell connects like a dream, almost immediately, never gave me an error.

Hi,
thanks for replying, you could be right as i am able to connect a digital camera and a card reader, both are usb 2 with no trouble.
Maybe we should be asking how many Glacier owners are unable to connect at USB 2 rates?.
How about we question Uxcell,to see if they can identify a problem.
Im reluctant to send my one back as it goes well in every other respect.
Just had a thought, have you tried connecting via powered USB 2 hub?.

No,I dont have one. I hear that hubs give more problems than they solve, so I dont know that that would help. When I receive my new Glacier, I will see if the USB problems persist. In any case they dont seem to be exclusive to the Glacier, as it seems I have a 1st gen nano clone that also doesnt conect at 2.0 sometimes, but other mp3/4 players consistently connect, so it cant just be the computer either.

Yes i tend to agree. Its one of those sticky type problems. You only have to do a google re usb 2 probs to see. Will be very interested to see how your second Glacier goes.i have another computer which should be usable on USB 2 but wont respond to a usb 2 device.
Please let us know how it goes,im thinking of getting another one.
You said you had tried other cables, where did you source them from?.i wanted to buy a spare.

The cables came from other players, such as the FMP. Ok, you wanted to know, this is how it goes:

When I first got the Glacier, I hooked it up to a friend's machine, using the USB cable supplied with the FMP I got from UXCell. I intended to transfer 2GB to the unit. After about 492mb of transfer (512MB I figure), it refused to continue the transfer, even after disconnecting and reconnecting the USB a few times. I gave up and decided to try this at home. Using another USB cable from another chipod, I managed to go beyond the 512mb barrier on my own computer (without doing anything special beforehand, such as reformatting). Although it gave me the USB 2.0 error a few times.

After some initial hiccups, it began to correctly transfer the files, but at 922 mb, it stopped with a volume error. After that, the green arrow indicating a USB peripheral in my system tray was no longer there, meaning the system no longer recognized the Glacier, although the Glacier thought it was still connected, since the black arrow was still in the middle of the connect SCREEN (instead of the zzzzz's). I dont know if it matters, but I had taken the battery out before this, so it was being powered by the USB port. Some mp3 players cant receive power from the USB port, but the glacier isnt known to be one of them.

The Windows error message that popped up was "Reconnect device... not recognized... explorer has problem". After closing the error window, the desktop refreshed itself for a second and windows saw the glacier again, automatically without my having to disconnect and reconnect. Then i stared transferring more files. A 20mb batch transferred okay. I intitiated another batch transfer of about 800MB, and this took about 20min, and succeeded. The player was filled to about 1.32GB. I tried filling the rest of the capacity, which took about 13:50s. It was only after it was full that I did a low level format, and confirmed it had 2GB.

Personally, I like the Glacier enough that if it has occasional problems transferring or conecting at usb 2.0 or staying connected, I think I can live with its communication quirks.
How often do you fill the player up, anyway? The list of players that can compete with it are small, and there's always some serious drawback to the competition (ie. it uses a 2.5mm jack, it costs twice as much, etc). To truly compete, they'd have to have a Nokia BL4c, a speaker, a min. 2.0" tft screen, reliable button design, 2gb onboard min. flash, be about the same price and preferably AMV for the simple fact that you can fit a lot more videos on 2gb with amv than avi (many people think you dont have to convert if its AVI because the ads tell you that, but they lie! You still have to convert to "special AVI for MP4" standard). You can get players with SD cards but the price of a 2gb card is close to the price of the player.

Out of curiousity, I tried the fresh new working battery in my old non working Glacier to see what would happen. I got as far as the movie screen, at which point the player gave me a low battery warning and shut off. I check the battery it ws 3.4v, and of course, played fine once installed back in the new glacier. After trying 3 Nokias in the old Glacier, I think I can pretty much confirm for certain the old Glacier gave up being able to either play or recharge a battery (it may work thru the USB port but thats not very practical for a portable player!).
