You'll find that the FMP actually suffers the least amount of problems. I've had my '1.5' for about 2 months and so far no problems to speak of. Even after dismantling it several times.
I've also now bought 2 '1.8s' and apart from it having a short battery life i've had no dramas.
I expect all units to last a long time and i'll be swapping out the existing batteries for newer, longer lasting ones. As always take good care of it and it'll take care of all your musical needs. For yourself and your family members, be aware of the hazards involved in trying to 'upgrade' firmware. It's a big no no because at the moment extracting/backing up compatible firmware for them isn't possible.
I reckon you'll love it, as will your family. They make excellent gifts.
