Just got a REAL 4GB FMP from Uxcell!!

Ok.. heres the beef.. i just got a REAL 4GB Full Metal Platinum (black)from Uxcell.

As far as i can tell... i've backed it up, formatted it and restored the files. Still showing 4GB!!

Let me say this thing is FAST! I copied half a dozen albums to it and they load quick! Browsing is superfast and the startup and sleep/shutdown is the same. This baby even has a telephone book.

Pity i don't own it LOL... but i'll be getting one for myself next week.
I'll try to do a review, or at least post some pics shortly

W00t! (i feel like i'm a kid again)

I have heard that the FMP is kinda slow, is the 4gb fast or what? o_0

_Odyssey 14th Mar 2007 1:00 am

Yes nanocopyuser
When i say FAST.. i mean its navigation is very quick switching from function to function. It's also very swift skipping from song to song, going to the file browser and selecting folders and songs. The speed is very similar to an original iPod.

I've played with the 1GB and 2GB and they are very slow compared to the 4GB. The 2GB being quicker than the 1GB. I guess having more memory on board allows it to do so.
I have my doubts that it'll be as fast once the drive is almost full. But will find out in time.

it's firmware is 9.0.50

_Odyssey,

Thanks for sharing this.

Would be great to hear your feedback once you get your player as well.

If anyone else has a 4GB FMP player from UXcell, would also love to hear your feedback on this as well.

warlock110.
It is faster, much faster. The shutdown sequence (the 'goodbye' diving into the water bit) is so fast you can easily miss it. It's over in less than 2 seconds.
Maybe they have a better CPU to handle the memory in this model. Who knows.
Once my friend has had time to dump more music and vids on it, and when mine arrives i'll fill it to the brim, we'll see if it maintains that speed.

However, regardless of the speed, it's worth it just for it's memory capacity.
I didn't mention it earlier, by the way it's the Black 1.8 FMP.

Hey Odyssey, sounds good, but how long does the battery last??

_Odyssey 19th Mar 2007 1:57 am

zachlardy, the battery lasts around 2 hours constant video playing and about 5 or 6 playing just music. Not good, but my friend doesn't seem to mind much.

We both got a bit of a scare today when files started to corrupt around 1GB. I deleted the corrupt files backed up the good ones and tried to format it with the mp3 utilities. I must have been using an incompatible version because it hit me with an error like "unable to format this disk type" or something. Taking a chance, i used Windows 2000 to format it to FAT32 and as expected it came to just under 4GB.
Then i proceeded to copy all the files back... around 400MB. Then i got a brainstorm. I decided to copy as many different file types to the player to fill it to the brim.
A couple of cd images, a folder with over 1GB of mp3's and several movie files until it reached about 3.5GB. the process was extremely slow. Single files copied quickly, but muliple files transfers took ages. The process took about an hour in total.
Then i started copying files back to another location on the Win2k systems HD. They copied back very quickly. About 10 times faster than they went on. I didn't have the time to test them all, but the ones i did check worked fine.
That should be a sufficient test to prove it is a true 4GB FMP shouldn't it?

EDIT: I should also point out, that during the whole time, the player was just as quick loading songs and videos, navigating menus and file browsing. Although it did slow down a little when it was almost full, enough to notice but not enough to make you sufficiently grumpy enough to throw it out the window lol

Re: Just got a REAL 4GB FMP from Uxcell!!

My 4GB FMP was delivered on Friday. Mine is every bit as slow as my wife's Glacier. I have to say that I am not very happy with it. I expected much better performance based on what I have read about. My firmware might be the issue as it is only 9.0.48 and not the 9.0.50 mentioned earlier in this thread.

Should I upgrade the firmware? Would it hurt anything? I have very little experience with these things.

lusth 26th Mar 2007 7:00 pm

My just delivered 4GB FMP is 9.0.50 and is slow as molasses. Otherwise, quite nice.

_Odyssey 26th Mar 2007 7:37 pm

elstaf

Whatever you do, DON'T upgrade it's firmware. versions 9.0.48 and 9.0.50 are not recoverable in the event of a failed flash and cannot be extracted using the s1fwx tool. The 4GB player i have here is very fast compared to the other models which is most likely due to fw 9.0.50. I don't know what you guys are doing thats making yours so slow. Maybe it's the way it's formatted? I've formatted this one to FAT32

pmilladcs 26th Mar 2007 8:20 pm

why aren't there any more apple clones at UXcell?

I will try reformatting mine and see if that helps. Thanks for the response.
