new and got som questions :)

hi all,
so i finally decided 2 buy an "ipod nano clone".
so i bought it @ ebay and it arrived today :).

now i searched threw the internet and found this forum,
and i gotta say its really cool :)

well but back to the player:

so i got a player similar to this one:
pic
the only difference:
the border around the screen is black and the text "mp4 digital player" is below the screen instead of "digital audio player".
can anybody tell me what exact player i got?
or do i have to open the player to know this?

and now i already wanted a new firmware on it.
so i first dumped my firmware.
and i saw lots of firmware out there,
but i was interested in the skinned one here in the downloads section:
"tmpx" or what it was called.
i tried to upgrade the firmware, but it didnt work.
do i have extract every single picture and import it into my firmware if i want the same skin?

and what is else possible by firmware modifying?
i can switch of the radio or?
and anything more?
is it possible to add even more games?

greetz

maaalin,

Welcome to the forum.

First things first, BACKUP YOUR EXISTING FIRMWARE using the s1fwx tool before doing anything. I can not stress this more. Just read the "Dead Players" section of the forum and you'll know why.

Upgrading the firmware on your player won't 'magically' enable any new features. It's really there as a 'safety net' in case your player goes faulty. A lot of the s1mp3 player manufacturers don't tend to update or change their firmware if it's working. Probably for cost saving purposes.

Hope this helps.

ahh thats cool thx.
ok i already backed up my firmware.
so changing firmware is (almost) only for skinning?
or has it any other reason 2?

and i got 4 games on my player.
but one just wont show up,
i think its in the firmware,
the code and the pictures are there.
there has to be a way to activate it or?

and it would be possible to add new functions to the player,
but would that be illegal?

Re: new and got som questions :)

maaalin,

You can also modify the WORDING of your player too. Rename things if you wanted to. There is a limitation though to the text characters in that you can't go over the existing amount of characters that is already there? Example: You can change "Pictures" to "Photos" (as the word "photos" have few characters), but you can't change "Pictures" to "My Pictures" as there are too many characters and it will 'error' when you try to save it from s1res.

You can also try modifying the TEXT FONT of your player too. That's abit of work though.

If you can find a way to add more functions to your player, I would be very interested to know. As far as I know, there are no 'hidden' extra functions on the player than what your player is capable of right now. There's a lot of people there who try to upload other firmware onto their player in the hope it will make it 'better' but come up with a 'dead player' instead.

Re: new and got som questions :)

well first it IS possible to add even own code to the player.
i could patch it, but i dont know how 2 write any code for it.
(perhaps i will start learning soon)

and i know, there are even 5 games in the firmware.
either one game of these has non images ( is text based )
or the images for 1 game is even missing.

and ill look, i think i should start with modifying first the images.
though im very interestend in what else the player can do.
a complete new os would be awesome.
an os, that would work for any mpx player ;)

//edit:

oh and another question...
its rly disturbing, that the backlight is ALWAYS on,
cant i make it switch of after like 10 secs or so?

Re: new and got som questions :)

Hey, if you can modify it and add more code, that would be great! Check if you can add more code because as far as I know and read from other forums, it doesn't seem possible......(??) But hey, I don't know anything about programming. If you do, then great. :)

Have a look here: http://www.s1mp3.de/ - it might be helpful.

To answer your question about the backlit, have a look at our Knowledge Base - How to: Set sleep and power off settings. This shows you how to set it so it's on all the time. Just reverse it and put a setting of "15" or something to make it turn off after 15 seconds of inactivity.

Hope that helps.

Re: new and got som questions :)

well in like 2 weeks i got time 2 take a closer look @ it.
and yes, s1mp3, he already made an "hello world" program,
thats why i know its possible ;)

and thx 4 the backlight information.

and im just lookin through the firmware again.
i think ill write a little map editor for the game BoxMan,
shouldnt be 2 hard :)
