what's firmware?

I've just got my mp4 this afternoon. During charging, I tried to test the player's functions. I don't know if it affects the battery.
Sometimes my computer did not recognize the player. The CD coming along seems to be useless.
I did go through all the functions, and I think I did press the upgrade firmware on my player, it did not show anything, just changed back to the previous screen (list of functions in setting). I don't know if it affects or makes the player "dead".
Now I'm scare to start using mine because the manual is really suck, I cannot understand what it wants to guide. I don't want to make any mistake that might damage my mp4.
BINH and anyone seeing this post, just please show me a little instructions to prevent me from making my mp4 or battery dead.
I don't want my misunderstanding of how to use the device ruin my mp4

Good to see your post.
Don't worry too much about your player.
Just as long as you don't try to update the firmware that operates your player with the wrong one and you'll be fine. If your player works, leave it as is don't try to do anything with you. You can if you want to, reskin it. Just make sure you backup your firmware.

What type of player do you have? Do you hve a post of it you can post in our "Gallery" section?

Also try not to accidentally select the 'firmware update" option from within your player, I've heard that can cause problems too.
