Default Question about firmware upgrade

Hey! I just read knowledge base and I want know that I understand everything right.
So,if I make dump.bin file with S1fwx tool - it is backup file to the firmware that I use right now, isn't? And when I after that upgrade my player with another firmware, if something goes wrong I can load dump.bin file with Mp3 player upgrade tool and get back my old firmware - and my player will be ok? Is this right?
Thank you!

Sandraylv,

That is essentially correct.
However, once you make dump.bin file, I suggest you right click on it, copy/ paste to another folder. Reason: once you play with it, and it no longer works what then? So, keep a virgin copy somewhere safe and copy it, and play w/ the copy. Also rename "new dump 1 .bin" Etc.

Sandraylv,

Correct in some parts.
The dump.bin is a backup of your firmware, and you can use it to modify your firmware.

However, when u mention "upgrade my player with another firmware" - the problem arises where if you do upgrade with another firmware which is compatible with your player, you will get what is known as a 'dead' player. There's been a few posts where this has happened and even though upgrading with the original dump.bin file, the player is never back to it's 100% normal functions.

While the s1fwx is good at extracting the firmware, it's not completely perfect and made not actually extract everything from your player. So wiping it with another firmware file then trying to reflash again with your orginal firmware might actually not bring back to it's oringal state.

Like the old saying goes "if it's not broken, don't fix it" .

If you use the firmware that you extracted yourself using the s1fwx tool (make sure you also have a backup of that as well), then modify it, change the background then upload it back. That should be fine. it's when people use other firmware for other players that it causes problems. However, if you use the firware that you extracted using the s1fwx, then it should be fine. I have tried this on a number of players and it works fine. However, your player might be different so be careful about it. Remember that there is always the risk of having your player 'dead'.... just keep that in the back of your mind that's all......
