Want a nano clone, but have a few questions...

Hey, I am shopping around for a nano clone mp4 player... I've done a little reading and it seems like there are tons of players out there with hacked firmware to make it seem like there is more memory than there really is.

So I have a couple of questions:

Does anyone know if there are any legitimate 4GB nano clones, or are they all fakes?

Is there any particular webstore or eBay seller that you would recommend as someone that doesn't lie about the memory capacity/etc...

I'd like to get a player that I would be able to customize the theme.

Thanks for your help.

BigTymer, I have yet to see any posts regarding real 4GB players. A genuine Ipod nano uses 2x2GB chips for 4GB players where these players only have 1 memory chip so I doubt that there are yet any true 4GB players in the Nano Clone style.

Binh the site administrator also has contacts with manufacturers and they can not supply him with 4GB players.

Some points to consider when selecting a player would be it's video format, AMV in my opinion is the better format as it uses a better compression algorithm than other formats so files are smaller and of good quality.
If possible go for a 1.8 over a 1.5 lcd as it highly improves video viewing quality.
AMV format is also a good indication that the player utilises an ACTION chipset which offers more customizing options and applications than say SIGMATEL chipsets

Choosing an eBay seller, I suppose positive feedback ratios, number of sales, how long they have been trading etc would factor into selecting where to buy from. Beware of dealers who warn you not to format your player and or put restrictions on the number of files can be stored or played.

Hope this helps :)

BigTymer

I have yet to see a legit 4GB player.

You have to also ask yourself as well, getting a 4GB player for USD$100 seems just too good to be true. It's like buying a Rolex watch from the guy standing on the street corner for $10, if you know what I mean.

In terms of ebay sells, I don't use eBay (it's not available in New Zealand) but as tadad suggests, first is to look at feedback I guess. Maybe write a comment for the auction and ask the seller what the warranty policy is for defective players?

Good luck with your purchase.
They are great little players, the price is very good and you can customise it to your liking (to some degree).

I really wouldnt buy anything above 2 gb from ebay... too many sellers ripping users off... contact the seller before buying too.. ask him if they are really 2 gb cause you've been hearing of fakes... and DONT leave feedback till you get the player and format it to check the size... then if it is a fake before you give feedback ask for an exchange or refund.. after ur happy with your player then leave feedback.. its like ur weapon... feedback that is... Good Luck.. I Like My Nano Clone.. Im sure you'll like yours...

Thanks for your help...

Ended up biting the bullet, picked up a black 2gb nano clone for $76 shipped... Comes with all sorts of accessories, bag, gel case, FM transmitter, car charger, etc... It's a 1.5" screen, I was looking for 1.8 but they seemed to be quite a bit more considering it's .3 of an inch ($20+) The one seller I asked about their 1.8" also said it didn't come with the video conversion software, so that was a dealbreaker. Weird, because just about every other one on eBay does come with some sort of converter, but this auction didn't mention it, I asked, and they said it doesn't have it...

Seller I ended up has excellent feedback (99.9 positive), looks to have sold a ton of these things without any negatives, so hopefully it's a legit 2GB. Plus, seller is in US so if something is wrong obviously it will be a lot easier to get corrected without shipping it overseas, IE Hong Kong.

I'll be sure to post pics when it arrives, hopefully sometime next week.

Looking forward to you posting your player :)
