Hi all,
I bid on a couple of these "4GB" players on Ebay but having read through this topic I think I'm glad I got outbid!

I'm not really up to date on all the technical aspects of these players so could anyone tell me if the players for sale by chiching08 or halimdehelen for example are like the hacked players some of you guys bought? The second one has a couple of pages of negative feedback so I guess the ones they are selling are fake...

If I've understood right from reading through this topic the bottom line is that a 4GB player doesn't exist, is that it?

Thanks

Nico,
At the moment 2GB is the most memory that this type of player can support. That said there are still hacked 2GB players on the market. If a trader is offering players over 2GB do not buy any players of them as they are more than likely all coming from the same manufacturer and there is a risk that all sizes could be hacked.

uxcell.com has had been recommended by a few members as a reputable trader offering good prices for their products, I understand they also trade on ebay.

Thanks for the feedback tadad1. I should have known a 4GB player starting at €1.50 with free postage was too good to be true. It just shows that you really need to be aware of what to look out for in Ebay listings.

I've bought a 2GB player from electronic_super_deals on Ebay. They have a 99.7% positive rating since 2000. I bought a 1GB player from them earlier in the year and it was perfect (until the screen cracked while in my bag but that was entirely my fault for letting it float around between keys, hairbrush and other sharp things). It still works despite me having dropped it several times, but I fancied a model with picture and video capabilities so hopefully the one I have ordered will be just as good.

Nico...I've bought several 2 GB players from electronic_super_deals (2 speaker models 93b5 and 93s5) and found them to be excellent. The firmware has been Lisong LSD_502_03 SDK:35.37 2006-06-23 and allows for "File select" browsing as well as the usual folder browsing. It can play 16 fps AMV video.

The items came with box from Hong Kong and were packed identically in a sealed padded envelope via trackable registered mail. Wish all EBay buying "experiences" were as good. The pricing was excellent as well.

jp,
I had a similar experience with electronic_super_deals the last time I bought from them: player came in box in a padded envelope in an incredibly fast delivery time considering it came from Hong Kong.

I saw cheaper offers on Ebay this time around but decided to with this seller as they seem reliable, and as I had such a good experience last time. The price was also very reasonable, about €30 for the player and the same for postage. I also liked the fact that it says this player has subfolder support as I listen to music in several different languages so it will be handy to be able to categorise them.

I'm glad to hear you had good experiences with the 2GB players you bought from this seller. I was a bit wary after finding out how some sellers can con you but you have reassured me now

Nico...I did a test with subfolders and was able to create and access on my player 6 levels of subfolders (didn't test further than 6 levels) within a main Music folder so you should have lots of flexibility in terms of organizing your music, dependiing on your particular player.

I've also found that my player will pick up the signal from my FM transmitter up to several feet away without having to plug headphones in to the player. So using the FM radio feature, whatever is playing from my computer via my FM transmitter (EBay purchase from Hong Kong; the one with the full band broadcast capability and built in thermometer), I can receive and play through the built in speakers without requiring an additional aerial. Any other player that I've tested requires headphones to act as an aerial for clear reception.

jp,
This is the model I've bought. One of the features it mentions is "FM Digital Radio Integrated-in Player (NOT FM HEADPHONE)" so I presume that is the same as how your player can pick up FM signal? I'm not quite sure what all of the tecnical specifications in the listing mean but does it seem like a decent enough product to you?

It should be a great player. I got a similar player to this one from a different vendor a few months ago. They are really tiny and mine works really well. Mine will play video at 16 fps for the 160 by 120 screen size. So I use AMV converter v4.00. It's a bit buggy and tends to crash if I try and convert more than two files in succession. I haven't found any other versions that will convert at the larger size at 16 fps.

Yours will probably have a bit better screen and more current firmware. Mine has a built in FM radio like yours does (some mp3 players come with a separate radio that's part of the headphones - generally don't work well).

The only problem that I found was that the speaker wasn't very loud which is why I got the 2 speaker player from electronic_super_deals. In the meantime, I've learned to use Super video converter and VDub to increase the audio volume (as well as improving the picture quality) so that the resulting converted video is louder. The speaker is certainly loud enough if using the player in a quiet setting.

The class screen cover is fragile as it is quite large and the glass is thin. Mine broke shortly after getting it so I removed it and covered the area with a hard acrylic LCD protector from 'da Products. I'd recommend doing something similar before the cover breaks as the sharp glass fragments can damage the screen. I was lucky and only had a small nick in mine.

Good luck!

jp, You can use Version 3.57 to convert 160x120 at 16fps without the bug hassels of 4.0 by setting it up as posted HERE but in your case leave the VFBS setting to "high"
