some questions about firmware

I have some questions about firmware and upgrade...

Why upgrade a firmware wich works good ? Wich is the interest ?

How know if the firmware is compatible with the mp4 player ?
By example, I have
2005/02/20
3.5.35
2006/03/02
C850A1V-V3.1

Why upgrade to 3.5.37 and which is the firmware present in the download section compatible with these player ?
