compressing mp3 files

is there a way i can compress .mp3 files?

mik641,
You can convert them to a lower bitrate which will reduce the size of the file but will also reduce the audio quality.
OR
You can convert them to .wma which are generally smaller than .mp3 files.

Have you also try .OGG files instead then?

If it doesn't play that, then you'll have to use MP3 for music files.

MP3 is already compressed. If you wanted to cut down the space, try tadad's suggestion and change the bitrate, but you will start to loose sound quality if you lower it too much.

quite true. i find that you have to find a good balance between compression and bitrate. lesser bitrate means lesser space. Anyway personally i lower my mp3s to 96 or 80 kb/s as lowering it below that results in very choppy playback. it boils down to preference anyway. Try using musicmatch too. hope this helps.

I converted all my MP3's to 96kbps wma files. I have over 50 albums on my 2gb player, well over 500 tracks, compression is great
