Beware: Possible spyware, adware, virus (??) put on players

Hi all,

I was testing an MPx player for a friend of mine.
It's a Sigmatel board player, Nano clone.
Full details, firwmare etc... will be posted soon.

However, I've just discovered something VERY interesting and would like to warn you all and see if you have this on your player.

Here's what I did:

1. DISABLE autorun on my computer (I disable it all the time). You can do this with a registry hack. Have a look here: http://www.google.co.nz/search?sourc...run+in+windows

2. Plug the MPx player through the USB cable into my computer.

3. After auto detecting it, go the drive of your MPx player (usually labelled "Removable Disk").

4. Make sure you have "Show hidden files and folders" ticked in Windows Explorer. You can do this by click on [Tools] then [Folder Options] from Windows Explorer. Click on the [View] tab at the top. Scroll down to where you see "Show hidden files and folders" and put a tick in there.

5. Once enabled, you will now see a folder called "RECYCLER". This usually points to your "Recycle Bin".

6. Right mouse click on the "autorun.inf" and choose "Open With" and NOT "Open" as you don't want to execute it.

http://www.mympxplayer.com/images/po...gy_autoinf.png

7. Once open, my autorun.inf file looks like this:

http://www.mympxplayer.com/images/po...y_autoinf2.png

Now, if you look closely at the commands on the autorun.inf, it's instructing Windows to execute "autorun.exe" if you have autorun enabled. Unfortunately, I didn't have that file in the "RECYCLER" on the drive of the MPx player so I couldn't scan it for possible viruses/spyware/adware etc...

But that looks very suspcious if you ask me.....

If you all have time, try the steps I did and see if you have that on your player.

Would be interested to know.

well. most definately worth to keep an eye out for it,but I've seen some of this guys have no clue how to properly put certain files in some directories in order to have them executed.
I've seen once a guy listed his c: drive in the file list of a driver disk.
my driver disk what came with the player for example is totally empty.lmao.
so I never really had a problem to execute any kinds of funny files lol

passbyer 29th Jul 2006 9:07 am

hmm.. i dont understand what the virus/spyware is? is it the "autorun.exe' the virus?

tadad1 29th Jul 2006 9:47 am

passbyer,
An autorun.ini contains a set of instructions that are carried out when you access the drive.
Like when you put a a DVD into your drive it will automatically start playing the DVD.
This can sometimes be used to install viruses on your PC if the autorun.ini contains instructions to install a virus or spyware program when you plug your player. In this case the autorun.ini contained instructions to run the autorun.exe which was hidden in the recycler folder. Autorun.exe could have been a worm, virus , trojan or adware that would have been installed on your PC.

fizzle05 29th Jul 2006 7:41 pm

hmmm.....well under a folder named "recycler" embedded 2 folders deep there is something suspicious about it, if a program was to be autorun usually it is in the root folder or one folder deep. A decent antivirus program, I use "Antivir", would tell you if it is a virus before it gets autorun or just run a scan on it as you have autorun disabled or......you could be a devil....and run it

fizzle05 29th Jul 2006 7:44 pm

thinking about it, having one of those would be quite desirable, because you could edit that to do whatever when you plug it in, for example save all contents of "my documents". I have tried for ages to get an mp3 player to autorun and only found that you need special ones made. Sounds like a plus point if its editable

phantomflanflinger 30th Jul 2006 4:02 am

Yep, that's the Virus I got, as I said earlier:

http://www.mympxplayer.com/viewtopic.php?t=985

It was easy to kill, not very dangerous when it infects your PC either.

Moonwalker 30th Jul 2006 9:49 pm

BEWARE!!! I just bought an infected player on eBay and it totally TRASHED two of my computers to the point where one is garbage and the on i'm on now is barely useable!!! My infected player is in a black box and is NO NAME. It reads "DIGITAL MP3/4 Audio Player" and it has a small yellow ribbon hanging off of it! BEWARE OF THESE PLAYERS!!!

Re: Beware: Possible spyware, adware, virus (??) put on play

Would it be possible that the person shipping these MP4 players out are updating the firmware, etc, with an infected computer?

admin 31st Jul 2006 12:29 pm

camra88

That's a good point. I had the same thought the other day too.

I think maybe they don't know their computer is infected as it's sitting in the "Recycler" instead and I've found the "autorun.exe" is not on all players, only some.

To all,

Another post which mentions about 'dodgy' software being installed from included cd's with MPx players.

Re: Beware: Possible spyware, adware, virus (??) put on play

I lost all my doc files and kept losing any new ones that i created.
Could not get rid of the virus.
Finally had to format the computer.
When i tried to format the MP4 player, I was again shocked to see that it had only 475 mb of memory against the 2 Gb that it initialy displayed.
Fortunately could get a replacement from the supplier.
The first thing i did was to format the player.

I will suggest all MP4 player buyers to format the player before starting to use it. his will tell u how much mem u have as well as save u from the virus problem.

dudette 6th Aug 2006 11:40 am

hey everyone

i accidently formatted my mp4 player for some reason. I don't know what made me do it..i must've been hullucinating or something... and the record and voice folders deleted so now my player can't record voice anymore. I was able to replace all my mp3 files but not the folders. Is there anyway to fix this problem because i've already tried creating new folders with the same name and everything. Do i have to renew teh firmware or something? i'm not sure...

dudette

Please post your request in a new post in the "Support/How To" part of the forum.

admin 6th Aug 2006 7:21 pm

fatflatcat,

Your account has been activated now.
It seems that users with @hotmail.com email addresses never get the activation email.

Are you able to check your "Junk Email" folder to see if the email is there just in case?

camra88 7th Aug 2006 8:56 pm

Re: Beware: Possible spyware, adware, virus (??) put on play

click on the record screen, NOT the voice screen to record your voice. It will automatically create a new folder.

I purchased a nano copy from ebay. and the software package came with a trojan virus. Fortunately my AVG scanner picked it up before any damage.

The virus was in a file named DEVON.exe

Details:

Quote:

Installation and Autostart

Upon execution, this worm drops a copy of itself as WINCFGS.EXE in the Windows system folder. It also drops and executes the Chinese version of NOTEPAD.EXE, KB20060111.EXE, in the Windows folder.

It modifies the following registry entry to ensure its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Load = "%System%\WINCFGS.EXE"

(Note: The default value data of the said entry is null.)

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)

Propagation Routine

Whenever a USB device is plugged onto an affected machine, this worm drops a copy of itself in the following path:

{USB drive letter}\RECYCLER\RECYCLER\autorun.exe
If the path, {USB drive letter}\RECYCLER\RECYCLER does not exist, this worm creates it.

This worm also creates the file {USB drive letter}\AUTORUN.INF, which contains the following lines in its body:

[autorun]
open=.\RECYCLER\RECYCLER\autorun.exeshell\1=Open
shell\1\Command=.\RECYCLER\RECYCLER\autorun.exe
shell\2\=Browser
shell\2\Command=.\RECYCLER\RECYCLER\autorun.exe
shellexecute=.\RECYCLER\RECYCLER\autorun.exe

The aforementioned file is responsible in automatically executing AUTORUN.EXE whenever a USB device is plugged on the affected machine.

Other Details

This worm creates the following mutex to ensure that only one instance of itself is running in the memory:

USBSpyRunMutex

This worm runs on Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003.

Terminating the Malware Program

This procedure terminates the running malware process.

Open Windows Task Manager.
• On Windows 98 and ME, press
CTRL+ALT+DELETE
• On Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003, press
CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, then click the Processes tab.
In the list of running programs*, locate the process:
wincfgs.EXE
Select the malware process, then press either the End Task or the End Process button, depending on the version of Windows on your computer.
To check if the malware process has been terminated, close Task Manager, and then open it again.
Close Task Manager.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*NOTE: On computers running Windows 98 and ME, Windows Task Manager may not show certain processes. You can use a third party process viewer such as Process Explorer to terminate the malware process.
On computers running all Windows platforms, if the process you are looking for is not in the list displayed by Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue with the next solution procedure, noting additional instructions. If the malware process is in the list displayed by either Task Manager or Process Explorer, but you are unable to terminate it, restart your computer in safe mode.

Editing the Registry

This malware modifies the computer's registry. Users affected by this malware may need to modify or delete specific registry keys or entries. For detailed information regarding registry editing, please refer to the following articles from Microsoft:

HOW TO: Backup, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME

HOW TO: Back Up, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows XP and Server 2003
Removing Autostart Entry from the Registry

Removing autostart entries from the registry prevents the malware from executing at startup.

If the registry entry below is not found, the malware may not have executed as of detection. If so, proceed to the succeeding solution set.

Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>
Windows NT>CurrentVersion>Windows

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, and C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)
Right-click on this registry entry and choose Modify. Change the value of this entry to:
load = ""
Close Registry Editor.
Deleting the Malware File

Right-click Start then click Search... or Find..., depending on the version of Windows you are running.
In the Named input box, type:
KB20060111.exe

I read that most of the people getting the E-Bay china copy ipod players have a trojan on the AMV conversion disc that comes with the player. I've read this from numerous people.

knob 22nd Aug 2009 12:24 am

Yes it's quite common on these players.

I had one the player's firmware partition myself, it was a low level threat, just make sure your antivirus software is up to date, usually you can copy any good bits from the cd and then throw it away if you want.

The virus is usually launched by "autorun.inf" on the cd or player, it's always best to switch autoplay OFF in any case for security.

Not sure why it's done, maybe somebody in the factory doesn't like their employer! , maybe..

I've found in most cases the software on the cd is generic and for the wrong player anyway, you can get most tools and software in the downloads section of this site and even more from http://www.mympxplayer.org
