Where do I start?

Please first let me request you excuse my ignorance, I have read so many posts, on this forum now that I am totally confused on what I do actually need to do.

My problem is that I unfortunately I was the successful bidder on 2 ebay items!! Both played fine for a short while before the corrupt named files appeared, some songs play for 10 seconds only, folders show as being 100GB+ etc no doubt what many have experienced. Firmware according to the player is currently ACI_V3.5.35 SC85051F. I have formatted the players as per instructions here several times.

I have a function (which I have not tried) in my “set up” called “Firmware upgrade”. To use this am I to first go looking for the file? And perhaps have that ready on my computer?

If I extract the firmware using the s1fwx tool, how do I “backup existing Frimware” first? Do I try to repair the firmware I already have using this tool before looking for the “correct” firmware.

I downloaded a file from http://radipshare.de/files/3220816/A...85051F.7z.html
it’s a .7z file I am not sure how to even use it.

Frankly I have given up on trying to view photos let alone avi’s, even the 4GB idea is now just a dream, but it would be nice to play a dozen or so songs! I doubt going back to the seller will be of any use, when we are crazy enough to agree to Postage of $50 from Hong Kong, thus the value of the product only being $50 or so, and my seller just kept replying in worse English each time!!

I would appreciate any help available, I am not computer literate and find some terms a little hard to understand. I thank you in advance for your patience.

To asnwer your questions:

1. Errors playing, it's best to format it, but since you said you've formatted it already, it might be a bigger problem. What did you use to format your player?

2. Follow the Knowledge Base article "How to: extract firmware of your player using the S1fwx tool" from here. That will extract the firmware that is on your player currently. However, it is only meant as a partial 'backup' and not a FULL extraction. The only way to get a 'full' backup of your firmware is to look in the cd and try to find any .fw files.

3. .7z files are just another compressed file. You can download 7zip from our [Downloads] --> [Tools] section.

Now, a question for you, what size players do you have? As this might be the root of most of the problems you're having.

Hi thanks for your reply.

In answer to your questions, I formatted using windows; right click on drive in my computer, quick format FAT32. Each time I have made sure the different computers I have used have accepted the "new hardware".

Size? Haha... (She hesitantly replies)... 4GB. …Supposedly

I assumed when you suggested “Backup Firmware” that I should be saving the files that are on the player in a safe place? I have d/loaded the “S1fwx tool” ready to go thank you.

On the CD I actually have very little that I can see relates to the player…
(The names below are copied from CD)
directx9.0c
RealPlayer10GOLD
The AMV movie conversion tool
The MTV video frequency
conversion tool
The telephone is originally the tool
WinAVI Video Conversion tool
windows media player

I do have two notepad docs. Called fwupgrade one in “The AMV movie conversion tool” and one in “The MTV video frequency conversion tool”

Just relised
(Just realised that the 7z file was sitting on a computer at work that didn’t have winzip installed sorry dopey me!!!!)

Hope this gives a little more info, I actually bought the second player as a present to take to UK with me on Monday…… So I really do appreciate any help Thank you….

I think the root of the problem is that your player is hacked and you copied more on the player than it could hold, so all the music files were corrupt, hence why they never played correctly.

You shouldn't use windows to format, but the format fucntion in the MP3 utilities software that came with your player (or can be downloaded from this site).

This will remove the hack and show you how much actual memory you have, then use the guide on this site to reload your firmware. Hopefully you got a player with some decent memory size (1-2gb).

Re: Where do I start?

Thanks Guys, So Much…… I ran the sw1 tool did the repair thing, I am now trying to upload the new firmware, I have tried to use the MP3 Player Utilities 3.68 option in my start menu, but I am getting a message that MSIen.msi is missing, I downloaded the SLD Codec Pack 2.2 from here but it seems to have everything but what I need.

I did run the HP format exe. I ended up with 1.98 in each player, and so far both are still working. So not sure about whether I need to upload the firmware?

One does have a earphone problem, only one side works (Mono) and I have to pull the jack out half way to get stereo, (swapped earphones, still the same problem) But hey….. at least I got 1.98Gb for my hard earned 4GB $$!!. I have written to the seller, lets see what he comes up with; a bad response will happily earn him a negative ebay comment and black listing addition here (with your approval).

Any advice on the upload of firmware, present one is SC85051F 2006/04/25
I previously downloaded your ACI_V3[1].5.35_SC85051F.7z and now have the 7zip program but still have no idea how to run (upload ) it…
Thanks..

Mad_As, since you get 1.98GB, seems a reasonable memory size. A firmware update is not necessary unless you are facing player problems or you wish to change the display screens.

And regarding the earphone problem, i had the exact same problem recently and it was a problem with the earphone socket's solder that broke off from the mainboard. Some slight soldering solved the problem completely.

Would suggest either you contact your seller regarding the hacked memory and the earphone problem. Else you could try re-soldering the earphone socket back to the board.

Good luck.
