Chip size vs stamp coded size

Hi all - fantastic site and info.
The utilities are just a breeze to use too - thanks for a great job.

Got a 4GB player for Christmas and the utilities tool showed its real size to be 500MB (4Gbit) that the seller advertised as 4096MB.

Thing is after taking the back off it the chip reads as
K9LAG08U0M which is a 2GB (16Gb) chip.

I've run through the utilities several times & formatted the player enough to convince myself I've done it correctly.

I'd be happy enough with a 2 GB player, but a 0.5 GB... Not considering I bought it to replace a 1GB player.

Any word on whether chips can be stamped incorrectly ?
Or whether I'm using the correct utilities to determine the true mem size ?

Used : MP3 player utilities 4.05

Cheers
Ra!

Ra , when formatting, did you ensure the slider was at the extreme left position for the final formatting?

There is a likely chance of wrong serial number stamping (which are usually sold as product rejects at a cheaper price), or it might be a fake memory chip made by a 3rd party.

Yes Lattesurf
thanks for the response

pretty sure I did everything correctly from start to finish (double checked)

Guess I will see what the seller says... and if they are willing to remedy their upcoming defamation :)

Ra!

P.S. the situation with two drives (17MB) + (sizeMB) in the mycomputer-explorer list occurs if you rerun the tool a second time. It didn't occur the first time for me - saw only one drive.

Numbers

My NyNix HY27UV088G5M still show 4 GB after 3 formats
NyNix site has a pdf file named "NAND flash.pdf"
It says that the 6th number letter has something to do whit the die

S : SLC + Single Die + S/B
A : SLC + Double Die + S/B
B : SLC + Quadruple Die + S/B
F : SLC + Single Die + L/B
G : SLC + Single Die + L/B
H : SLC + Double Die + L/B
K : SLC + DSP + L/B
T : MLC + Single Die + L/B
U : MLC + Double Die + L/B
V : MLC + Quadruple Die + L/B
W : MLC + DSP + L/B

So my chip has a V -> 8Gb (1GB) X 4 (Quadruple Die) = 4GB

And I have tried to formate the memory 3 times and it still shows 4 GB

Can someone confirm that i have a 4GB player.

Edited -------
The player don't act normal if I fill it with more than 1GB of data. So its a fake.

Re: Samsung and Hynix Nand Flash Sizes and Serial Numbers

I have a typical Glacier MP4 player that was alleged to have 8GB memory.

The big chip reads: 29F8G08MAA

Any idea what type of memory this is? There appears to be a memorex logo on one side... not sure though...

HI,
I'm new and hope for help.
i have problems with my mp4 player ( http://www.kingzon.de/de/pro/Multimedia/MP4/M4SJ.html ) with 8 GB.
I opened it and the chip says:

I didn't find firmaware for the player. i need the orginal firmware, because i have installed the wrong and now it have only 1,89 Gb and when i turn it on, there is only a white display.
