Small Screen Cinema Classic Conversions

This weeks Classic Small Screen Cinema features three Superman animations by Director Dave Fleischer.

Quite controversial for their time the Superman shorts were at one time the most expensive cartoons ever produced. They pretty much bankrupted the Fleischer studios because while they were well made and popular, they didn't make their money back.

Superman: Electric Earthquake (1942)

Electric Earthquake has a Native American villain, terrorizing Manhattan (not yet Metropolis) in order to get the land back for "my people."

A mad scientist attempts to blow up Manhattan. Lois Lane investigates and Superman saves the day.

Animation by Steve Muffati and Arnold Gillespie, story by Seymour Kneitel and Isadore Sparber, music by Sammy Timberg.

Director: Dave Fleischer
Producer: Max Fleischer
Production Company: Paramount Pictures, Action Comics & Superman Magazine

Superman: The Mechanical Monsters (1941)

Superman: Eleventh Hour (1942)

Produced during WWII Eleventh Hour tends to reflect the times and a note of propaganda is evident with Superman striking back at the foe.

Superman is responsible for several acts of sabotage at the Yokohama Navy Yard in Japan. Lois Lane is held hostage but Superman saves the day.
Animation by William Bowsky and William Henning. Music by Sammy Timberg.
Director: Dan Gordon
Producer: Max Fleischer
Production Company: Paramount Pictures, Action Comics & Superman Magazine
Audio/Visual: sound, color

These animations are made publicly available through the Internet Archive for free viewing and downloading they are subject to fair usage licensing and may not be distributed for profit.
