Default IPOD NANO CLONE MEMORY MOD

Hello everybody,
and a big hello fron Naples.
I bought 5 mounths ago a nano clone that I decide to "open" few days ago.
It has a "APPLE-M V2" motherboard were there is a free place for another memory chip.
So I decided to buy a 1gb samsung chip and solder it in order to increase the memory capacity to 2gb.
Before to do this operation I want ask to the forum :

1) Did anyone just do this mod ? What results'
2) I think that after soldred the chip I have to FORMAT : any risk with the firmware (the format operation erase the fw ?)

thank you for your replies !
