I finally got my Chipod! First impressions.
 

Well 42 posts and 1 eBay guide later... I can finally talk about MP4 players from experience, because I got my first MP4 player today. Came from Hong Kong to Canada in 13 days (that's days, not working days). Not bad considering it was ordered around Xmas. I u/l a photo of it in the Gallery section (michiganjfrog's nano clone).


MEMORY:

Bought it from ellieshang, an HK eBay seller with over 99% feedback across thousands of transactions. Does not sell over 2GB far as I know, and after low level formatting this thing several times, I'm happy to say it's a true 2GB! Considering that I won it for like $21US, I couldn't be happier. It cost less than what a new 2GB mp3 player would in the stores.

CHIPSET:

It's an ACTION chipset with a firmware of 9.0.48 (don't know yet if that's good or bad! Not sure whether I should try to upgrade the firmware, or if this will prevent me from adding mods to the player because my firware is too new? Not sure where to upgrade the firmware anyway..... the player SETUP shows you can, but there's no website in the manual for firmware upgrades.

VIDEO:

The player had a trailer from "Terminator: Rise of the Machines". The video did leave something to be desired. It changes depending on the angle, and there was distinct "ghosting" effects from any moving pic. Don't know yet how feasible it'd be to watch a movie on this thing.

PHONES:

The earbuds look just like the iPods and have the name "Apple" on the stems. I don't think the REAL Apple buds even have that! They sound like shit warmed over, so I would value them at about 50 cents. Unfortunately, they are the only 2.5mm earphones I have, but I was wise enough to get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter before even getting the player (I got the kind that's like a small cable, white). Even on the 50 cent earbuds, the sound on music was really good! Can't wait to compare it to my 2GB mp3 player.

LITERATURE:

The manual was, surprisingly, in something resembling English. However, quite useless, because.... well, you be the judge:

"4.2.7.1: Elucidation: The sound effect mode that sow to play music in this choice, sow to play music still at this time.". ????

Maybe 4.2.7.2 will shed some light?:

"4.2.7.2: The interface manifestation Show the way together" circulation enactment". "

I'm not making this up. This is what was said in a bullet in the RADIO section:

* The knife man - impulsive punishment: Broadcast the level is smooth to roll over."

??? WTF?

Does anyone have a Chinglish to English translator handy? Anyway, real men don't need manuals....

cool stuff..the manual is basically paper that needs to be recycled but hopefully you will enjoy your new player.. i love all of mine as their capabilities are fantastic.. i still havent been able to find your pic in the gallery (probably because it needs to be approved) but i will check it out and tell you what i think..but then again..all mp4's rock!

9.0.48 is a new firmware so you wont be able to extract it or mod it with themes for now unless new versions of s1res and s1fw are released.

HI You crack me up man!! :lol: I love the Chinglish to English Translater thing!!

I too rolled hilariously on the floor when reading the manual for my player, also a 9.0.48 FW model :roll:
Cant wait to have the tools to trick up my interface, it really needs an update Let us know how you go with charging the unit first up. I and many others have had issues with charging the battery for the first instance, I have found though, let it charge for at least a day and then dicharge it and so on etc etc. Mine took a couple of recharges to get the battery up to a standard of the supplied 180mAh capacity of it.

awesome manual! Here's one from a '4gb' (actually 2 gb) player I just got.

'Don't ram the hard things. Or it will casue the appearance broken or battery falling or other hardware broken'

Yeah, I was also worried about the battery (that's why I haven't given the seller any feedback yet, even though I checked out the memory). It didn't seem to be charging much when I had it hooked up to the computer to transfer files and stuff, so I used the charger overnight. But I heard about people's batteries and keyboards melting after using their charger! I was also unsure how long you can safely leave it in the charger. The following morning the battery hadn't melted, and the player did finally show a FULL battery in the screen indicator (didn't take long before it became a half battery again).

The charger's indicator light is always RED though, (with the green faintly on). So I have no idea how long it takes to do its job, and whether you need to remove the charger after a certain time, or even how long the battery lasts til its dead. I am planning on buying a good battery for the player though (good as I can get that will be able to fit), and replacing the standard one, cos I'm sure its crap.

Some more gems from my manual, for those waiting in line:

4.2.10: "Reply to read the mode. At 4.2.8 reply to read that the interface interface hases already do to elaborate on."

I would ask them to "elaborate" on that, but I'm afraid of the reply I get. It might look like this:

4.2.11.1: "The choice replies to read the number of times, completing while reply read thus this in reply read that the number of times future reunion withdraws automatically. Distinguish for 1-10 times."

?? If anyone can figure that out, I think the CIA could use your talents.

Yes the battery seems an issue across the board in regards to how many people are screaming for help on this site!! My experiences are........ as with a lot of others, no different. I have not had any melt downs................................

I am currently looking at the range of replacement batteries on Ebay, check it out, somewhere on these forums a couple of guys have reported success with swapping out the old one and putting in a Nono battery, they are 330 mAH 3.7v which means they are more than double the capacity of the small pieces of aluminum foil placed in ours at the factory. Search out the threads if you are interested. Uxcell (my players supplier) has one in the ipod section of their site for a very good price. I have wondered though about and the ones on Ebay( also very well priced) are they top quality?? this is anyones guess, but I think I will risk it. The dimensions (depending on the internal space) should fit perfectly with a new Nono replacement Battery. You need to pop open your unit and measure the space provided, somewhere in the ball park of (40mm x 22mm x 4mm) Cant remember the exact quote from one bloke on here, I measured mine it conforms to the dimensions stated by some of the online sellers. Oh and if it has a third white wire dont panic, just cut it short and tape up the end so it does not short on anything!!

Thanks for the info on the battery, that really helps. And thanks for the info on the USB cable, that was very helpful too. I was hoping to go way better than 330mah though. Arent there batteries for the iPod Nano that are a much higher mah rating? Since the Nano (not Nono) is abouit the same size as a Nano clone, shouldn't it fit? I wonder if anyone here has changed their Nano clone battery for a higher than 330mah?

And what are your experiences with the battery? I'm curious to know how many hours people are getting (video/music) with their original nano clone batteries? I still have no good idea how long mine lasts.

Yes the Nono (Nano) battery should fit, according to a thread in another section (Support and how to)it has been done, which is why I decided to search out some betteries and do it too!! Just have been comparing Ebay scammers..... err I mean sellers :oops:

I was kinda thinkin too that there must be better than 330 mAh but the only ones to suit the clone are the Nono betteries anything else is way to big to fit into the SMALL space that houses the factory bettery. One Ebayer has a 400 mAH for sale BUT for some reason I had a spazm in my gut saying.... RIP OFF. If you check out the pix of the betteries you will notice thay have a fold over thin card that has some spec written on it, it seems a little sus in one 400 mah add. I may be very very wrong, also another guy which I emailed about this fact, and low and behold the whole add changed on the ebay web page :P ,, stating the right mAh rating

I don't know how you're finding sellers on eBay that have the Nano clone battery. A search for "nono" on eBay came up empty. Even on UXCELL, it only showed a power charger, not a battery. However, I noticed UXCELL has batteries for the Nano that go up to 900mAh (its $11US for this model). Not sure if this is suitable for a Nano -clone- though:

Hi Mate,

I need to apologize :oops: I refer to nono as a little sarcasm towards the the whole Apple Ipod industry. It is not a brand of bettery, = (better battery) I only refer to nono as NO NO :shock:
Search for ipod batteries on ebay again and you may have better luck

word of advise, anything other than "suited for Nano" is way to big to fit into the clone space, UNLESS you can compare exact dimensions in your clone and the battery you may be buying. roughly 40mm x 22mm x 4mm. I think the 40mm length may be just enough for an actual Nano battery. My battery is somewhat shorter in length @ about 37mm

No problems, mate. All iI need are the dimensions, to find a suitable battery. If I find a "bettery" (better than 330mah) suitable for my nano clone, I'll let people here know.
