Slowness with our site

8 February 07

We have completed the upgrade and moved our database to our new server now! Hopefully if things go well, there shouldn't be anymore slowness issues. If it is, please post it in this thread -> here.

Our new server has been ordered and completed!!!
It's a P4, 3.0Ghz, 2GB RAM with a 72GB SCSI hard drive. Hopefully the faster SCSI drive and moving the database onto it's own server will make the site run a lot faster and with fewer problems.

In saying that, expect the site to be down for a few hours sometime this week while we move the database across. I will confirm the day soon.

As you all may have experienced, the site has been running really slow lately and sometimes doesn't load at all.

After many, many discussions and support tickets with Webair (our hosting company), they have said that the problem is there are lots of SQL queries sitting in the server that loops around and doesn't end. This then mounts up and eventually 'hangs' the server.

The site runs IntegraMOD, which is a modification of phpBB. It has about 30 different scripts, so I would have to find out which one of those is hanging the server.

However, on a good note, we are going to be getting another dedicated server! This one will be specific for the SQL Database that this site runs on. Spec'ed up to take the heavy load of a SQL database. It's actually going to cost more than what we currently have!

So hopefully within a week, we will have the new server and things should 'speed' up if all goes well.

Once again, apologies for the problems you are all experiencing at the moment. Thank you for your dedication and support for the site.

We are working on the issues and expect bigger and better things for this site very soon.

Don't know what you did already, but the site is loading real fast for me today.
Thanks!

nice to see people like you dedicated towards this site and ready to pay and keep this site going on for free for people like me and others who have problems with mp4 players.

thanks a lot :D

Glad to see the site is useful to everyone.

lddrizzt1,

I think sometimes the site runs fast if there are fewer visitors online at the same time. Next time you notice the site going slow, check out the main page and look at how many users are online at the same time (on the right hand panel) and let me know if it's more than 90 visitors.

It's running a little slower than yesterday, 91 users online right now.

i've noticed that usually when the number of guests hits around 70 and above (perhaps the guests are the SQL queries? i don't know about all these stuff), the site gets extremely slow, and usually does not load.

i'm on a cable connection (downstreams around 250kb/s), so i guess the problem is not on my downstream.

Hopefully the new upgrades would smooth things out for all..

Re: Slowness with our site

well im on 2mb/s on a pc with a 2.8ghz dual core processor with 2mb l2 cache and its still painfully slow

PleXo 14th Jan 2007 3:44 pm

its not ur pc or ur net speed, its basicly because kiddies are trying to hack this site admin has to add more security which is slowing the server down painfully

thats why he is getting a better server to handle it all :D

PleXo,

What my hosting company told me was that the problem is more with MySQL on our site and the scripts that run on our site.

I was told that we have over SQL 33 processes running on the server that was choking up the available memory on the server. Usually it's about 3-4 processes, but for some reason, it's about 33 processes or more! Even with 2GB of RAM, it chokes it.

It could well be hackers trying to hack my site by executing the other .php scripts on my site to find a vulnerability. I know it has been hacked before but I did a big block on the site and it has hasn't been hacked before. Your point is valid, I will check more on any other vulnerabilites, but as far as I know, it has to do withe MySQL server and that it's not 'killing' the processes from the server's memory.
