MP4 Game Player Question

Hi I'm new to the forum here, and just had a quick question about a number of postings coming up on ebay: PMP Game Player 3" 260K TFT Mp3 Mp4 Camera Cinema MG5.

I noticed there were a couple of posts about these before, but I'm wondering if anyone has purchased one of these, and if they're any good? I've asked a couple of the sellers about specific functions (namely the fact that it supposedly emulates 16 bit roms) but there's been a number of communication issues. If anyone has any info it'd be great, thanks in advance.

GODVer3 , i recall a post on such a player sometime back, but i couldn't find it. Anyway, the poster could not get the other additional functions working. It seems that the firmware does not contain any of the additional functions besides the basic music, video, radio, picture playback.

Be sure to check with the seller's return policy should you purchase it and decide to return for a refund.

i'll try to locate that post and reply here if i find it.

hi GODver3, i just ordered 2 1gb blackhawk from Uxcell so i should be able to let you know in the next few weeks...

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

GODVer3,

If you want a TRUE gaming console that emulates roms, you are best to take a look at the GP2X.

It's an open source, Linux based gaming console.

I have one of these and it works great!
It can emulate MAME and heaps of other emulators as well as play DivX movies, MP3's etc...

Have a look at the website: http://www.gp2x.com.

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

I've taken a look at the GP2X and frankly, it looks amazing. My only problem is actually getting one, as I don't have a credit card (just a paypal account). Do you know of any good sellers in the states or Canada that would accept paypal? Thanks in advance (looks soooo cool!)

lattesurf 19th Jan 2007 12:01 am

OMG! I WAN THAT!
But it's AUD$404 for the value pack.. damn...

GODVer3, i've found 2 sites which accepts paypal as payment. They are the official distributors closes to you.
US: http://www.gp2xstore.com
Canada: http://www.gamersection.ca

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

GODVer3,

Game Asylum has them on their site. They are based in the USA.

Click on the "GamePark" link on the left hand side or do a search for "GP2X".

Hope that helps.

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

GODVer3,

I also have one, I got mine last summer, it's pretty useful and you'll want to buy this more than a Black Hawk because this one has a community of people updating games to it EVERYDAY (lol nice all caps warning) It's always improving it's got a well working mame emu like the admin has said, also it has a great SNES emu (squigesnes) Sega Genesis emu (DRMDx) GBC emu(gnuboy) a Flash Flayer (Pocket Flash) and best of all, an in development (but still some great titles working such has Resident Evil & Silent Hill) PSX emulator (Gp2psx) idk if I missed anything but yea if you want a preview of the games they have just check this wonderful comm. http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi

oh yeah, only drawback to it, is that you're definitely gonna wanna buy a 4 or 8gb SD card to fit all your games n movies n muze on.

Also Rechargeable batts. HIGHEST mAh 2500 or 2600 if you can find 'em

here are some helpful links:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-19-49-en-15-gp2x.html <- Definitely takes paypal btw

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

To answer your question about the GAME MP4 player (the OEM ones from china) : i have two of them lying at home, and i must say i'm impressed with them !!
First of all, the screen quality is wonderful ! Much better than the nano clone mp4 players, and with 2.5" QVGA (320 * 240 i think although the manual says 960 * 480 ??) resolution and perfect contrast. Ideal for viewing a movie !
Next, it hasn't crashed since i used it the first time (2 weeks ago) which is also a good point.
You have the basic functionalities like probably mentioned in the ebay ad : mp3 playing, movie playing (mine does .asf format). Also it has a tv-out (all cables included) and you can even record from a movie source through a AV-in connector (using the same cable). Ofcourse you can also record music through the line-in connector.
Next, it has a digital camera built-in : don't expect super quality (think its a 0,3 mpixel) but it still is neat to use it : there are some filters built-in like negative, sepia colors. Also you have a 4x digital zoom, but of-course no flash, so shooting at dark places is not possible.
Next, it has a built-in speaker, that doesn't go that loud, but enough to play games on it ... see below.

And last but not least, you can play all nintendo 8bit games (.nes) easily available on the net. Like donkey-kong, mario bros ... the classics from the 80's ;)

Oh yes, i almost forgot : you can get them with internal memory of 512mb, 1GB or 2GB (maybe also the 4gb, i'm not sure) but you can also expand memory through the built-in sd memory card slot.

Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask !

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

Well, I'd already purchased one before I'd asked the questions (impatience...) but I'll post a review once I get it for anyone wondering about these. I've been looking around, and while the GP2X seems a little beyond my price range, there's a number of others I'm looking at, specifically the Gemei X720 or X900 and the Ainol X1000. Beyond that I haven't been able to find much, expect for the fact that the majority of these model player (GAME PMP) are manufactured by Shenzhen Sandshine, and on their website are several conflicting reports. Anyways, will update in a few days.
Cheers
Liam

ps Intrabrew...16 bit snes or md??

admin 25th Jan 2007 11:20 am

GODVer3

Look forward to your review that's for sure! :)

TUCKER 25th Jan 2007 5:29 pm

Just got my first Black hawk from(1 more to come) from UXCELL today I was really impressed at first seems to be very good ( lot better than the nano clones...) problem went when i tryed to charge it , it wont charge so now i have to wait for uxcell to advise what to do... so i will follow up with full review shortly...

admin 25th Jan 2007 6:40 pm

TUCKER,

Is this charged through USB and/or wall charger? Tried both and still not charging?

TUCKER 26th Jan 2007 5:12 am

admin

yes did try both even if this model is not supposed to charge thru usb (the red light on the wall charger that is suppose to turn off when full turns off as soon as i plug the player to it)...

GODVer3 26th Jan 2007 8:48 am

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

With my old mp4 player it wouldn't charge in the wall socket when it was on or off (slider switch) but if I plugged it into the usb socket on my computer, and only plugged it in about halfway into the mp4 player it would charge like that. Also if I plugged it all the way in, I could just choose safely remove device in Windows, but leave it plugged in, and it would charge like that. Just a thought :P Ps I've also heard that you're not supposed to charge when switch is set to off, apparently the battery explodes.
Cheers, Liam

TUCKER 26th Jan 2007 3:41 pm

just tried another wall charger i had, now the player turns on but is still not charging i think im on the way it can be used as long at it is plugged so at least we can try it while waiting for an answer from uxcell. The other problem is that it is showing a message errors on nes games so i cant play...

intrabrew 26th Jan 2007 4:16 pm

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

i also encountered 2 nes games that didn't work on the device until now, but the other 6 i tried worked perfect !
I don't know if there are different versions of .nes games ?

TUCKER 27th Jan 2007 5:48 am

Hi intrabrew

I tried with more then ten and still nothing did you use any converter or something before you transfer to the player??

GODVer3 27th Jan 2007 9:42 am

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

Have you tried different rom formats? (other than .NES) You could try and find .FAM or .FDS or .UNIF. Or try putting them in different directories, or maybe loading from the sd card slot or the internal memory. Also try and find a really popular one like the first M**** and different versions of it (eg (J) (U) (E) after name). That's all I can think of trying at the moment.
Cheers, Liam

TUCKER 27th Jan 2007 2:57 pm

Hi

no nothing to do it doesnt want to read games

GODVer3 27th Jan 2007 6:09 pm

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

boo :( I'll update once I get mine. Sounds like we might be hooped though.
Cheers, Liam

intrabrew 29th Jan 2007 1:42 am

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

strange !
i just copied some .nes files on the internal memory into the correct directory (game i believe) on the mp4 player, and they worked at once. I tried donkey kong, asterix, mario bros, ...
Are you sure you're copying them in the correct folder ? Are you using the 8bit nes games ?

TUCKER 29th Jan 2007 5:17 am

Yes 100% sure...

I tried both files from supplied CD and from the net, also tried direct on the internal memory ( game folder) and on the the card the player saw the files both always shows "decode errors" the player even came with 3 games installed that i cant use, still waiting on a repply from UXCELL to find out what happens....

Twilight 31st Jan 2007 12:29 pm

Hi i'm new to this site.
I have a 3" PMP game player, the screen slides
up with the game pad underneath.
It plays 8 Bit Nes games. Have sent photo into the
gallery.

TUCKER 2nd Feb 2007 9:29 am

Hi

does anybody know anything regarding the " GAME CARD " for those player...

thanks

admin 2nd Feb 2007 12:23 pm

intrabrew,

Can you do me a favour and upload the game roms you have on your player that works? It would be good for others to try it to see if it works on their player too since it works on yours.

TUCKER 2nd Feb 2007 2:45 pm

Hi

I know it will not solve my problem as i received a second player today ( i had order two) and the second one works just fine so i tried the roms from the second one thinking it might help and it still doesnt work.... the problem is really with the player itself

admin 4th Feb 2007 1:43 am

TUCKER,

In that case, since you have TWO players.
Can you got into the "setup" menu within your player and look for something like a "firmware version"?

I would be interested in seeing whether that is different between the two players. I wonder they put the wrong chipset in one of your players instead?

TUCKER 5th Feb 2007 5:32 am

Hi Binh

Unfortunatly this player is not like the nano clone and it does not shows firmware version in the setup ( I tought about this too as i had one of the clone before) so still waiting.....

regards

Re: MP4 Game Player Question

Hi, me again, I received my player a couple days ago but will hold off doing a review for a bit. The one that I received has so far met many of my expectations but fails at life occasionally. Mine DOES seem to play NES roms, however it plays them at incredibly low speeds, and SMC is not recognised. Also of note is the fact that avi files do not play (as explicitly stated by the person I bought this from). The only time I received a format error with NES roms was when the extension was in capitals, when in lowercase it worked fine (although many games won't play, just become all garbled). After sending a message to the supplier they asked me to send it back with an RMA number for replacement, however I'm hesitant to do this, as I doubt that'll make NES roms playable or SMC files play, that's likely a hardware issue. What do you think?

PS In other news I ordered a GP2X today :P Looking forward to try it out, however I'm still interested in this player, as it is fairly cheap, and easily resellable (if it works!)

PPS If you still want I could upload a number of the working roms that I have, but I doubt that would help :(

Cheers, Liam

PPPS The screen is AMAZING!!

TUCKER 8th Feb 2007 9:17 am

Hi GODVer3

you have to convert your video files with the tools that is on the cd and then it will work ok

(ps my son dropped his player ( the ones that runs the roms) on the floor yesterday and the screen cracked so now i have two non functional Black Hawk)

wrong-way 10th Feb 2007 11:35 am

hi group,i am new to this forum,i hope you can help.i have the MG5 as pictured in post 1 of this thread.cept i got it for 20 bucks with a broken screen.the unit works fine when you set it to tv out mode as my son pulled off once and has no idea how he did it.so i was wondering if anybody who has one of these could power it up and record the button presses for me so i can reach and set the unit to tv out.
also,my other option is to edit the firmware so it boots directly to tv out.shouldnt be to tough if i can only find the software to pull the image off, edit it and reflash it.
oh yea,,,if anybody has a smoked one that the screen may be good on id be interested in it for parts,
thanks so much all of you for your time in advance,
don a.k.a. wrong-way
