MP4 player, VBR and "format error"
 

i just got a player similar to a glacier not long ago and im pretty happy with it but i noticed that there a slight static or distorted sound in the background of mp3s with varible bitrate that isnt there on fixed rate files. but i also noticed it isnt in some VBR files, is it the player having trouble decoding them? or is it bad encoding?
oh and also when i put long videos on the player i get a format error somtimes and other times i dont, its usually after about 5 minutes however i can skip forward to that point and watch another 5 minutes from there. does any one else have this problem or know how to fix it (and i have already checked for a hack, and there was one :( ) ??

You have a hacked Glacier? Hard to believe, uxcell doesn't hack players, is it from uxcell directly? About the VBR, never had that, what is the max. bitrate of your VBR files? What I found was the player is prone to failure when files are fragmented, the little cpu just can't prefetch enough data (or not fast enough) to play defragmented parts skipless. A defragment of the player could help getting better video play.

well no i dont because its not really a Glacier, its just that model so i thought i should call it a Glacier so you knew what i was talking about.
um the max bitrate is 320 on most the files i think, and i dont think it would be fragmented yet as it is still new so hopfully they are just dogey files i will have to listen to them on somthing else i think.
oh and if i get expensive headphones will these player put out the quality other players will? because im thinking of getting UE super-fi 5 pros :) .

EART , regarding the VBR playback, i'll suggest that you re-encode those music files into a fixed bitrate like 128 or 192. As what Que mentioned, the processor probably could not cope with the VBR decoding, thus causing static noises.

I'm not really into the video playback thing, so could not help you much on that.

Generally good quality earphones produces significant better sounds than as compared with the crappy supplied earphones.

I edited your post and removed the word "Glacier" as your MP4 player isn't a Glacier, I didn't want it to be confused with that.

Do you get "Format Errors" while playing a video or music file? Or both?

If you get format errors during video playback I would say you need to re-encode your AMV files to "medium" quality instead as it seems your player can't handle the "high" quality setting.

2 people asked me to delete my post. i can't delete it but i did edit to remove what i orginally wrote.

How are VBR files identified in Windows folders? I just chekced through a spitload of my mp3's and can't find any that say VBR, so I'm assuming they're the ones that say "0" for the bitrate. Those 0 bitrate files play no problem on my computer of course. However... on my Glacier they say "format error", even though they're mp3's. So I guess you got lucky that they play! (Damn! I just realized how screwed I am.... I did want to be able to play all my mp3's!). BTW, what's the firmware version on your pseudo-Glacier?

My Glacier plays OGG files, because I just tried it with an OGG file. However, the screeching was so bad on the OGG file, you wouldn't want to listen to it. It also plays WAV files. And there's no screeching on them. But there is a nasty "crackling" sound on WAV files. So at least my Glacier can play MP3's. Well some of them, anyway.... I just tried loading 4 or 5 WMA files.... it gave a "format error" on about half of them! Geez, its not looking good.... I was about to buy a Glacier for a friend who has a lot of WMA files and now... I may have to cancel the order.

(What are my chances of expecting a firmware upgrade that will solve the decoding problems?! Doesn't look good when there isn't even a firmware service available on UXCELL's site).

BTW, I tossed the earbuds that came with it, they're useless. I'm using SportaPros by Koss and it sounds quite nice, it is a good sounding player (I'm not the only one who thinks it sounds good, but I'm curious to know how it compares to an iPod Nano or good MP3 players). I'm sure the SuperFi's will be great with it.

lattesurf, i think that probably is the problem but then its weird it will play some of the vbr files fine, any way its a shame VBR does save some space. As for the head phones i have sennheiser HD 580s and they sound terrific so i know good head phones make a big difference but will the player be able to put out the quality? has any one compared the sound quality with a branded player?

i thought my player was a Glacier, isnt Glacier just the name uxcell have given to an OEM product?
and the problem is only in the video and seems to happen randomly somtimes after playing for a while :? so i should try medium image or FPS ? i think a lower res seems to make it play longer before crashing maybe it fills up its memory or cache at a certian point and then crashes :roll:

as far as your VBR is concerned, i agree with lattesurf. converting them to a stable bit rate using a free program like Audacity would solve problems like fast/slow running of songs, static etc.

as far as your videos giving Format Errors are concerned, i agree with the admin. while converting your videos using amv converter, try using medium image quality. not only do they remove format errors but they also reduce the output amv file size reasonably without any visible change in my opinion.

i dont know exactly how to identify them but i know they dont come up as 0, i only have one file that is 0 and it wont play on my player.
The files that are VBR seem to have wierd kbps (which i only just checked and may be my problem) some of my file say they are 663 and 557 kbps and since the player dont usually play files with such a high bitrate this could be my problem maybe somone encoded them with max kbps at 663 or maybe windows just gives an incorrect bitrate for VBR (probably since it could only be an average and theres no way they average out at 663?) any way im sure some of ur files will be VBR look at the kbps while the song is playing on ur mp4 player and it will go up and down in real time, well it does on mine at least.

i have heard SportaPros sound quite good, i really want to know aswell how they compare to ipods etc.. i have good sennheisers but no headphone amp or anything so i cant really test it on those :( i guess i will have to wait and see on super-fi's and hope for the best :lol:

like you said EART, i have never seen a VBR file which shows 0 bitrate. they normally show bitrates which do not exist and when you play them using winamp or someother program, you will notice that while playing winamp will show you that the bitrate keeps on changing (128 to 256 to 192 then back).

just try and do the things which i told you whenever you have time and let us know of the result

that guide will help make the amv files play better than they normally do.

also,

If the video file you want to convert has 29fps, use medium fps setting while converting.

If it has 25fps, use high/low fps setting.

These settings will help avoid your amv videos from skipping and play smoother

IF you're having problems with video on the Glacier, its because the Glacier has problems with full size video. This may be the fault of AMV software (requiring an update), or it may be the fault of this player, I don't know. As others have found, you have to reduce the quality/size. These are the values I use for AMV v4.09 (Using "Normal" for the angle in all of them, the player will adjust as necessary):

AMV SETTINGS FOR GLACIER:

Full size movie: 208 x 176 (low) image quality: middle
Partial size but high quality movie: 208 x 160 image quality: high
Widescreen movie: 208 x 144: image quality: high

Its not a hacked player. The Glacier cant decode VBR Mp3's (along with some variations of other formats)

The ones I sent back played vbr mp3 and vbr ogg without troubles. Got a message this morning Uxcell will send me 2 new, so I will check and report back.

That's very strange... unless you have a different firmware version? I had 9.0.48.

The Actions chipset is able to decode VBR-encoded mp3 files.

However, for the audio decoder to decode VBR files, requires more processing power than fixed rate mp3 files. This, the Actions chipset lacks, so some VBR files may play, some may not, and some intermittently.

It all depends on the range of bitrates used and the step-rate that it changes from one rate to another.
